About The Position

Sentara Health is seeking to hire a qualified individual to join our team as an Inpatient Coder/Abstractor. This position is remote and is full-time with a day shift schedule. The role involves coding inpatient accounts using appropriate ICD-10-CM/ICD-10-PCS/CPT-4 codes for hospital reimbursement, mortality & morbidity outcomes, research & statistical and regulatory compliance. The coder will abstract, code, and assign necessary demographic and clinical data elements required for inpatient records, utilizing encoder software to ensure appropriate reimbursement and accurate DRG & MSDRG assignment. The position requires consultation with physicians for additional information or clarification of diagnoses and procedures, as well as providing education on coding, documentation, and medical necessity requirements. The coder must work collaboratively with Nursing Staff on the Concurrent Documentation Improvement Team and perform other related duties as requested by HIM management.

Requirements

  • 2+ years of inpatient coding experience.
  • Educational coursework in anatomy, physiology, and current coding practices required.
  • CCS or CIC certification required within 1 year of hire.

Responsibilities

  • Codes inpatient accounts applying appropriate ICD-10-CM/ICD-10-PCS/CPT-4 codes.
  • Abstracts, codes, and assigns necessary demographic and clinical data elements for inpatient records.
  • Utilizes encoder software to assure appropriate reimbursement and accurate DRG & MSDRG assignment.
  • Completes all work in accordance with defined productivity and quality standards.
  • Consults or queries the physician for additional information or clarification of diagnoses and procedures.
  • Provides education to physicians on coding, documentation, and medical necessity requirements.
  • Assures optimal ethical reimbursement for coded encounters and compliance with coding practices.
  • Uses concurrent documentation database to accurately reflect queries and updates to DRG cases.
  • Collaborates with Nursing Staff on the Concurrent Documentation Improvement Team.
