About The Position

OOCL (Orient Overseas Container Line) is a leading global provider of ocean container transportation and integrated supply chain solutions, with operations spanning the globe. OOCL has recently established a Risk & Compliance (R&C) department, which includes three specialized branches: Risk Management, Regulatory & Claims, and Legal. We are seeking an experienced In-House Counsel to lead the Legal team and provide strategic legal guidance across our North America operations. This role requires strong expertise in contract law and familiarity with FMC (Federal Maritime Commission) regulations. While maritime law experience is a plus, it is not mandatory—our North America Group (NAG) leader will provide guidance to bridge any knowledge gaps as needed.

Requirements

  • Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school
  • Licensed in at least one US jurisdiction
  • 4 years of licensed legal experience
  • Strong background in drafting and reviewing legal documents
  • Experience with insurance claims, mediating disputes, and enforcing regulations
  • Solid understanding of corporate law principles and regulatory frameworks
  • Excellent communication, negotiation, and analytical skills
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines effectively
  • Ability to work independently & as part of a team
  • Proficiency with legal technology tools

Nice To Haves

  • Familiar with international conventions and treaties
  • Experience with federal and state laws, maritime regulations, and international legal matters

Responsibilities

  • Draft, review, and negotiate contracts, including service agreements and vendor/supplier contracts
  • Manage customer boilerplate negotiations
  • Handling contracts with our sister company, OOCL Logistics (end-to-end supply chain service provider)
  • Provide legal advice to OOCL North America Group companies
  • Advise management on compliance with maritime & government regulations
  • Liaise with FMC and CBP (Customs & Border Protection) for C-TPAT (Customs-Trade Partnership Against Terrorism) certification, including regular meetings with FMC
  • Partner with external counsel on litigation cases and coordinating with corporate headquarters in Hong Kong as needed
  • Represent the company in legal proceedings, including court cases and arbitration
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable laws, regulations, and industry standards
  • Collaborate with the R&C team to identify and mitigate potential risks
  • Manage legal risks associated with business operations and transactions
  • Evaluate legal claims and disputes, providing input on resolution strategies
