About The Position

The Immigrant Workers Specialist position is focused on improving, protecting, and preserving the rights of immigrant workers through community outreach, education, and advocacy. The role involves conducting workshops, developing awareness campaigns, and serving as a liaison between immigrant workers and the Department of Labor (DOL) to ensure equitable access to services and resources. The specialist will also assess the effectiveness of outreach efforts and work to enhance the cultural competency of DOL staff.

Requirements

  • A bachelor's degree from an accredited institution.
  • Two years of experience in providing assistance to improve the rights of workers or immigrants.
  • Experience in public education, communications, or community outreach activities.
  • A master's degree or law degree may substitute for one year of experience.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct community outreach activities to ensure DOL programs are accessible to immigrant workers.
  • Hold workshops to educate immigrant workers about their rights under labor laws.
  • Assist in developing awareness campaigns for immigrant populations.
  • Assess DOL services to identify areas needing improvement.
  • Measure the effectiveness of immigration outreach efforts through evaluations.
  • Translate DOL materials into languages spoken by immigrant populations.
  • Improve cultural competency of DOL staff regarding immigrant worker needs.
  • Serve as a liaison with immigrant workers and advocacy groups.
  • Provide outreach to agricultural employers about DOL services.
  • Inform agricultural and non-agricultural workers about DOL resources.
  • Refer complaints outside of NYSDOL jurisdiction to appropriate agencies.
  • Target outreach based on census and resettlement data.
  • Maintain contact with community and governmental agencies regarding immigrant workers.
  • Attend community events to stay informed about immigrant issues.
  • Establish relationships with state and federal agencies to assist immigrant workers.
  • Promote DOL programs in the rural sector for immigrant farm workers.
  • Provide technical assistance to agricultural employers regarding labor laws.
  • Determine the status of farm workers and explain their rights.
  • Perform inspections and investigations regarding farm worker employment and housing.
  • Review and investigate complaints against agricultural employers.
  • Inspect farm worker housing for compliance with regulations.
  • Evaluate complaints and make recommendations for resolution.
  • Coordinate with other programs to resolve complaints.
  • Follow up with workers to ensure resolution of their complaints.
  • Analyze reports and data regarding immigrant population trends.
  • Prepare correspondence and reports on immigration issues.
