About The Position

Position Summary: Under the direct and indirect supervision of the Radiation Oncology Supervisor, the Medical Physicist, and the Radiation Oncologist, assist in the administration of therapeutic radiation to pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients. To enhance departmental operations through positive relations with patients, patients’ family members and visitors, physician support and staff interaction. The Radiation Oncology Imaging Technologist works closely with the radiation therapists to assist in patient preparation, and patient communications during instances of high patient volumes. Use independent judgment to maintain continuity of patient care of the highest standards, in an efficient, caring manner.

Requirements

  • Minimum Education: None specified; however, must be sufficient to meet the standards for achievement of the below indicated license and/or certification as required by the issuing authority.
  • Minimum Experience: None
  • Licensure Requirement: Must have and maintain ARRT (R).

Responsibilities

  • Assist in the positioning of patients (utilizing treatment devices when prescribed) for treatment with accuracy according to prescription.
  • In the presence of a radiation therapist, administers prescribed doses of radiation to specific body parts, using radiation therapy equipment according to established practices and standards.
  • Performs quality assurance procedures on linear accelerator and CT scanner to ensure proper operation.
  • Prepare and construct equipment, such as immobilization, treatment, and protection devices.
  • Independently performs CT Simulation immobilization and scans as ordered by the radiation oncologist.
  • Observe and reassure patients during and after treatment and report unusual reactions to physician.
  • Follow principles of radiation protection for patient, self, and others.
  • Maintain accurate records, (in patient’s chart and electronically), including such information as radiation dosages, elapsed days, equipment settings, appropriate charge capture, and patients’ reactions.
  • Ability to work independently, utilizing self-direction to prioritize the workload and carry out the tasks with flexibility for volume variances.
  • Maintain treatment schedules, gives proper notification to patients of treatment times, and notifies patients of any scheduling delays.
  • Troubleshoot problems with equipment, patient medical conditions, and patient satisfaction situations.
  • Follow infection control and universal precaution guidelines.
  • Communicate effectively in writing and speaking to convey information effectively.
  • Follows policies, procedures, and safety standards.
  • Completes required education assignments annually.
  • Works toward achieving goals and objectives, and participates in quality improvement initiatives as requested.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
