The Ohio State University Infectious Diseases Institute is seeking a motivated and skilled individual to join the IDI Genomics and Microbiology Solutions Lab (IDI-GEMS) as a laboratory research operations specialist. This position is integral to the IDI-GEMS lab, which serves as a research incubator for the infectious diseases research community. The lab encompasses five service areas, including the Bacillus Genetic Stock Center, tick-borne pathogen testing, dust pathogen testing, genomic sequencing, and bioinformatics. The primary focus of the IDI-GEMS lab specialist will be on tick-borne pathogen testing, with a secondary focus on the Bacillus Genetic Stock Center. The specialist will also be expected to assist in other lab areas to ensure organizational efficiency and support professional development. Under the guidance of the IDI-GEMS director and the tick-borne pathogen testing lead, the lab specialist will utilize their research lab skills to perform various tasks, including tick identification, DNA extractions, and diagnostic tests for tick-borne pathogens, adhering to the CDC guidelines. The specialist will gain expertise in the laboratory information management system (LIMS) for managing tick sample orders and tracking pathogen testing progress. Additionally, the lab specialist will maintain content on the Buckeye Tick Test website and collaborate with relevant parties on LIMS and website issues. Responsibilities will also include order processing, strain preparation, and client communications related to the Bacillus Genetic Stock Center, as well as establishing test plans, generating quotes, and maintaining inventory. This full-time, non-exempt, term position requires on-site work in labs designated as BSL1 and BSL2. The role may involve non-traditional work hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, and may require overtime based on work volume. The position is initially a term of three years, with the possibility of conversion to a permanent role based on performance and budget considerations.
