About The Position

The IACUC/IBC Regulatory Compliance Specialist at The University of Chicago plays a crucial role in supporting the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) and the Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC). This position is responsible for ensuring compliance with regulations governing the use of live vertebrate animals in research and the handling of bio-hazardous materials. The specialist will provide administrative support by receiving and pre-reviewing protocol submissions from investigators, ensuring that all submissions are complete and meet the necessary regulatory standards. This includes verifying training requirements and ensuring that protocols are congruent with related grants. In addition to protocol review, the specialist will assist investigators in preparing their research protocols and will manage all correspondence related to IACUC and IBC submissions. This includes drafting letters to investigators regarding the outcomes of their submissions and ensuring that any necessary supplemental forms are submitted for review. The role also involves preparing meeting agendas, organizing meeting packets, and drafting minutes for monthly IACUC and IBC meetings. The specialist will conduct semi-annual facility inspections and follow up with principal investigators to resolve any deficiencies identified during these inspections. They will also be involved in post-approval monitoring, which includes record reviews and procedural observations, and will communicate with principal investigators regarding compliance issues. The position requires collaboration with the University Research Administration on grants and contracts that involve laboratory research, ensuring that all compliance documentation is prepared and submitted in a timely manner. Overall, this role is essential for maintaining the integrity of animal research at the University of Chicago, ensuring that all activities comply with federal guidelines and internal policies while supporting the research community in their efforts to conduct ethical and responsible research.
