Make a Difference as an I&E Technician As an I&E Technician at Ergon, you can look forward to an engaging day-to-day experience filled with hands-on tasks and continuous learning! Your journey will include routine inspections and maintenance of instrumentation and electrical equipment across the network such as devices for level, flow, pressure, and temperature, along with VFDs, valve actuators, PLCs, and HMI/SCADA systems, ensuring everything runs smoothly and efficiently. You'll install, maintain, troubleshoot, and commission electrical, instrumentation, and automation systems in field and facility environments and collaborate closely with your team and plant operations to utilize your troubleshooting skills to solve problems. Enjoy the stability of a guaranteed 40-hour workweek with a flexible schedule - work four 10-hour days (4/10s) from late spring to early fall, giving you long weekends! Weekend and after-hours callouts periodically occur, but overall travel typically follows a Monday-through-Friday schedule, allowing you to enjoy your evenings and weekends. Plus, with the potential for over 300 hours of overtime annually, you'll have ample opportunities to refine your expertise. Due to the nationwide spread of our facilities, this position requires up to 75% travel. Trip duration is capped at 2 weeks for the rare jobs that extend through the weekend.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • 2+ years of instrumentation and control system experience in oil & gas, chemical, or process industries
  • Hands-on experience with smart field devices (Emerson/Rosemount, Micro Motion, VEGA, Endress+Hauser)
  • Familiarity with Allen-Bradley and other control platforms (hardware and system support)
  • Experience with HMI/SCADA systems (Ignition & PanelView preferred)
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, schematics, and manuals
  • Working knowledge of signal types (4–20 mA, HART, Modbus, etc.) and communication protocols
  • Strong troubleshooting skills for wiring, loop integrity, and device communications
  • Knowledge of safety procedures, lockout/tagout, and hazardous area classifications

Nice To Haves

  • Associate degree in Electrical Technology, Instrumentation, or Automation
  • Experience with CMMS such as SAP & MaintainX
  • NFPA 70E Certification

Responsibilities

  • Install, maintain, troubleshoot, and commission electrical, instrumentation, and automation systems in field and facility environments
  • Configure instruments and devices for level, flow, pressure, and temperature, including VFDs, valve actuators, PLCs, and HMI/SCADA systems
  • Perform loop checks, functional testing, and calibration of field devices
  • Interpret and update electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and P&IDs
  • Respond to service calls and emergency breakdowns to minimize downtime
  • Collaborate with engineers, automation teams, and operators on system upgrades, optimizations, and preventive maintenance
  • Maintain detailed work records, service logs, and compliance documentation
  • Support spare parts and equipment inventory management
  • Promote safe work practices and compliance with company safety programs and industry regulations (NEC, NFPA 70E, OSHA)
  • Oversee work orders in SAP/MaintainX from initiation to completion
  • Promote teamwork, a positive attitude, and a culture of high performance
  • Available for out-of-town and overnight assignments
  • Perform other maintenance duties as requested
