About The Position

The Hyperbaric Technician plays a crucial role in supporting the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Civil Aerospace Medical Institute (CAMI) Aerospace Medical Research Division. This position involves observing research subjects in a hypobaric research chamber, ensuring their safety, and providing situational awareness during experiments. The technician will support the Optimized Flow Oxygen System research project, which includes a series of experimental sessions where subjects simulate airplane passengers at pressure altitudes. The role requires the technician to act as a monitor for subject care, ensuring that all safety protocols are followed during the research activities. This position is classified as On-Call with day shift hours, emphasizing the need for flexibility and readiness to respond to research events as they arise. As part of the responsibilities, the Hyperbaric Technician must attend hypobaric research events from start to finish, which includes taking anthropomorphic measurements and ensuring that subjects meet specific health criteria. The technician will also complete a pre-flight, pure oxygen breathing protocol to minimize the risk of altitude decompression sickness (DCS). During the research sessions, the technician will observe subjects for signs of decompression sickness and assist with equipment adjustments as necessary. The job requires a strong understanding of decompression science and the ability to remain calm under pressure, as well as effective communication skills to interact with research subjects and other team members. The position demands a high level of physical fitness and the ability to wear oxygen masks for extended periods, as well as the capability to participate in simulated altitude decompression events. The technician must adhere to strict medical and physical requirements to ensure the safety of both themselves and the research subjects. This role is integral to the success of the research conducted by the FAA and requires a commitment to maintaining a drug-free workplace as mandated by federal regulations.
