About The Position

Contribute to research and development tasks within the Environmental Sciences Laboratory (ESL).

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Oceanography, Marine Geology, Geophysics, or related discipline.
  • Experience with processing, analysis, or interpretation of oceanographic survey data.
  • The position will require attention to detail, effective problem solving, sound engineering judgment, good communication skills, and the ability to use time effectively in order to meet deadlines.
  • US Citizen: Applicant selected will be subject to a government security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information at the level appropriate to the project requirements of the position.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree in Geological Oceanography, Marine Geology, Geophysics or related discipline.
  • IHO Cat-A Hydrographer Certificate or completion of the Multibeam course
  • Current or recent eligibility for access to classified information.
  • At least one year of experience with one or more of the following:
  • Geological Oceanography and/or Marine Geology including expertise in seafloor mapping, sedimentation processes, bottom sediment characterization, geoacoustics, and/ or ocean circulation
  • Processing of hydrographic survey data including multibeam bathymetry, backscatter, sub-bottom, sidescan, and magnetometer
  • Expertise in GIS analysis and interpretation of oceanographic data
  • Hydrographic survey planning
  • Subsea cable or pipeline route planning
  • Experience with subsea geotechnical site characterization for construction of pipelines or offshore installations
  • Experience working at-sea with data acquisition equipment.
  • Experience with commercial software packages such as SonarWiz, CARIS, Qimera, Fledermaus, MakaiLay, and/or ESRI ArcGIS.
  • At least one year of experience with environmental analysis using Matlab or Python.
  • Experience working in both Windows and Linux environments.
  • Experience summarizing analysis results in technical reports and PowerPoint presentations, and presenting research results.
  • Proven ability to work with minimal direction, formulate research plans, solve tough problems, and take initiative.
  • Demonstrated excellent interpersonal communication skills.
  • Cumulative GPA of 3.0 with a 3.5 in major coursework.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct desktop studies by evaluating archival and academically available hydrographic and GIS data to characterize various ocean environments for bottom type and understand the oceanographic and geophysical processes involved.
  • Develop hydrographic survey plans that may include the collection of bathymetry, side scan, or sub-bottom, and the deployment of sensors such as Current Meters, Cores, AUVs, and Ambient Noise measurement systems.
  • Provide at-sea support for shipboard data collection efforts.
  • Environmental characterization of various ocean regions using hydrographic datasets from various sources including bathymetry, backscatter, sub-bottom, sound speed, current meters, cores, etc. Includes collaborative research efforts with other team members.
  • Implement and maintain research grade software and analysis tools to support the analysis and interpretation of oceanographic data.
  • Preparation and review of analysis presentations and reports.
  • Presentation of analysis results at internal and external working group meetings (may include travel).
  • Other related functions as assigned.
