About the position

This position assists the First Year Experience Program Director in designing courses (i.e., First Year Seminar, Academic Mindset, Major/Career Exploration) to support Center for Learning, Advising and Student Success (CLASS) undecided, underserved and at-risk students. The incumbent also serves as the primary coordinator of the Bridge Living-Learning Community, designed for first-time freshmen conditionally admitted to West Virginia University. The successful candidate works closely with centralized and collegiate career services offices to enhance student engagement with major and career inventories, fairs and systems.

Responsibilities

  • Oversees the development of and leads the initiatives of the Bridge LLC for conditionally admitted students to WVU.
  • Develops and executes programming for the residents in the Bridge LLC for both fall and spring terms.
  • Serves as the primary instructor for the first-year seminar (WVUE 191) courses designated for the Bridge LLC participants.
  • Monitors Bridge LLC students' participation in LLC events, residence hall programs, and academic supports, and conducts student outreach and personalized interventions on an as-needed basis.
  • Collaborates with campus partners (i.e., Advising, REACH Student Success, Student Life) to deliver programming that aligns with the goals of the Bridge LLC.
  • Develops and conducts assessment on Bridge LLC programming and initiatives and tailors future programming to support high-risk students.
  • Coordinates and leads the Bridge LLC initiative group.
  • Oversees the design and implementation of curricula for the first-year seminar, academic mindset and major and career exploration courses (i.e. WVUE 191, WVUE 189).
  • Designs and maintains course content and instructional materials, including lesson plans, presentation materials, instructional activities and worksheets.
  • Supports CLASS specific courses in the university CMS (Blackboard-eCampus). Builds course templates in development shells and copies to individual course sections.
  • Ensures quality of instruction aligns with university and industry standards.
  • Tests and evaluates educational technologies to meet student instructional needs and accommodation guidelines.
  • Assists with hiring, onboarding, training and mentoring graduate teaching assistants and other instructors.
  • Conducts classroom teaching observations and provide constructive feedback to instructors.
  • Provides technical assistance to CLASS instructors.
  • Assumes a 3:2 teaching load during the regular academic year.
  • Collaborates with Career Services Center and Purpose Center to assist students in identifying their personal strengths, values, and interests through assessments, self-reflection and career exploration to make informed decisions about choosing a major.
  • Coordinates with colleges to provide information sessions, panels, and shadowing opportunities for students interested in majors offered by the respective college.
  • Designs and implements programs in consultation with Career Services Center to help students explore academic and career paths, aligning opportunities with their interests, skills and goals.
  • Builds and maintains relationships with career centers and offices to ensure CLASS students are invited to career/job fairs and other college- or department-sponsored events.
  • Assists the Program Director with design, development and implementation of assessment and survey instruments.
  • Assists the Program Director in analyzing data secured from evaluation of teaching and other survey instruments.
  • Reports on program outcomes and provides recommendations for program improvements to enhance student engagement and success.
  • Participates in professional development and training sessions to acquire and maintain knowledge and skills related to instructional design.
  • Stays informed about trends in career services, higher education, and student development to continuously enhance services and support for students.
  • Provides support to departmental and campus-wide programs (i.e., New Student Orientation, Academic Day, Mid-Year Academy, etc.).
  • Collaborates with Program Director and web designers to design and maintain the First-Year Experience webpage.
  • Represents First-Year Experience on committees, in meetings, forums, conferences, workshops, as well as professional development opportunities.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in higher education, education, counseling, social/behavioral science, or related field.
  • A minimum of two (2) years of experience working in secondary or post-secondary institution teaching/supporting high school or undergraduate students.
  • Any equivalent combination of related education and/or experience will be considered.
  • All qualifications must be met by the time of employment.

Nice-to-haves

  • A minimum of one (1) year of experience involving web-based instructional material design, development and deployment.
  • A minimum of six (6) months of experience involving teaching, curriculum development, and campus wide programmatic experience in a higher education setting.
  • Use of course management tools (preferably BlackBoard products).
  • Matching eLearning technologies to instructional goals.
  • Designing and presenting workshops.
