About The Position

Within the Department of Transportation (DOT), to perform technical and skilled work relating to a landscape maintenance program in the statewide highway system; to· be responsible for the maintenance of equipment, the application of general use pesticides, professional tree work, and the utilization of plants used to beautify roadways and roadsides; and to do related work as required. May be responsible for the supervision ofsubordinates engaged in cleaning and maintaining roadside, landscape planting, including transplanting shrubs or trees, pruning trees, tree stump removal, weeding, spraying, fertilizing, rolling and sodding slopes, and mowing grass. To be responsible for the maintenance of shrubbery and other plants used to beautify median strips, slope coverages and roadsides. To supervise maintenance subordinates in special roadside projects such as selective tree and shrubbery thinning and appropriate herbicide application procedures dealing with native flora. To recommend landscape planting for roadside improvements and erosion control, including grading, filling, sloping, seeding and sodding. As a licensed commercial motor vehicle operator performing safety sensitive functions, to be responsible for providing a safe work environment at all times for co-workers and the traveling public by following established work rules and the rules on drug use and alcohol misuse; safety sensitive functions means at all times, from the time an operator begins to work or is required to be in readiness to work until the time he or she is relieved from work and all responsibilities for performing work; all times includes waiting to be dispatched, inspecting, servicing or conditioning, at the driving controls in operation, other than driving time, loading or unloading, supervising or assisting, remaining in readiness to operate, and repairing, obtaining assistance or remaining in attendance upon a disabled commercial motor vehicle. As assigned, to operate heavy trucks equipped with plow blades and aggregate spreaders to remove snow and ice and spread abrasive and de-icing chemicals on road surfaces. As assigned, may operate mowers or tractors with attached rotary, gang, sickle or other type cutters to control vegetation in ditches, medians and other areas of state-owned right-of-way. To be responsible for explaining landscape maintenance policies and plans to subordinates. To inspect trees, shrubs and grass planting and other landscape work done by private vendors to ensure that the work has been done according to specifications. To make field investigations for the purpose of detecting roadside trees which should be removed or trimmed. To submit reports as to progress of the work in landscape maintenance projects. To perform the functions of this classification in a variety of environmental and weather conditions. To do related work as required.

Requirements

  • A working knowledge of acceptable roadside landscape maintenance methods, practices and techniques and the ability to apply such methods, practices and techniques, including the safe use of appropriate equipment
  • a working knowledge of arboriculture, turf maintenance and safe use of herbicides
  • a working knowledge of the methods commonly used in the eradication of insect pests and diseases of ornamental plants
  • the ability to lay out, coordinate and supervise the work of unskilled personnel
  • the ability to direct proper seeding, sodding and fertilizing methods and practices
  • the ability to keep records and prepare written reports
  • the ability to follow oral and written instructions
  • Graduation from a senior high school
  • Considerable employment in public agency or in private industry involving arboriculture or landscape maintenance at a technical level.
  • Must obtain a valid Rhode Island Commercial Driver's License (CDL), Class B with airbrake endorsement, and must maintain as a condition of employment.
  • Compliance with the USDOT Federal Regulations of the Omnibus Transportation Employee Testing Act of 1991 and the State of Rhode Island's Drug & Alcohol Testing Program Policy & Procedures is a mandatory requirement and a condition of continued employment.
  • Must be physically qualified to perform assigned duties as evidenced by a physician's certificate.
  • Must obtain and maintain a Hoisting License with an Aerial Lift Restricted Endorsement as regulated by the Rhode Island Department of Labor & Training.

Nice To Haves

  • To work statewide on all RIDOT roadside assets, landscaping, trees, graffiti removal, ACI supervision, to run heavy equipment; to drive snow plowing equipment during winter operations if needed.
  • Experience with tree trimming and felling, experience operating heavy equipment, landscaping and herbicide application experience.
