About The Position

The Nebraska Department of Transportation (NDOT) is seeking a dedicated Highway Construction Technician I/II to join their team in Holdrege, Nebraska. This role involves performing inspection duties on highway construction projects, including sampling and testing construction materials, documenting contractor work, and conducting surveying activities. Requirements

  • Must be at least 18 years of age and have a valid driver's license.
  • Highway Construction Technician II requires experience in construction work such as surveying, materials testing, or field inspections, or relevant coursework or training.
  • Ability to communicate both orally and in writing.
  • Skill in surveying, materials testing, construction inspection, and operating equipment and software.
  • Must be able to lift up to 100 pounds and work in outdoor temperature extremes.
  • Must be able to report to work outside scheduled hours for emergencies within 30 minutes.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in surveying, road construction, materials testing, record keeping, trigonometry, and geometry.
  • Experience in operating heavy equipment or snow removal equipment.
  • Computer experience including word processing, spreadsheets, SiteManager, GEOPAK, and MicroStation software.

Responsibilities

  • Perform inspection duties on highway construction projects.
  • Sample and test construction materials.
  • Document the contractor's daily work.
  • Conduct surveying activities related to highway construction.
  • Learn to read and interpret construction and bridge plans effectively under supervision.
  • Obtain a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) as part of training.
  • Operate snow removal equipment and perform snow removal activities as needed.
  • Work varying hours outdoors based on the contractor's schedule, including nights, evenings, and weekends.
  • Document construction-related activities using computer record-keeping software.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of quantities installed by the contractor and a diary of construction activities.
