About The Position

Amazon Web Services (AWS) Hardware Engineering is a fast-growing and leading-edge research and development unit that designs, engineers and qualifies cloud-optimized compute and storage enterprise products. Our servers are industry-leading in innovation and operational excellence, and are critical to the success of the AWS service owners and the more than one million customers who rely on AWS today. Our engineers solve challenging technology problems and build architecturally sound, high-quality servers and components to enable AWS to realize critical business strategies. As part of this, the Hardware Engineering team owns the total hardware validation testing cycle and ensures the products meet or exceed the high expectations of our cloud customers. Why it matters: The public cloud IT infrastructure market is growing at a remarkable rate and is seeing rapid adoption from companies of all sizes. The quality of one of the largest server fleets in the world starts here. We directly improve the business outcomes of more than a million customers who depend on AWS. Why You’ll Love it: You'll be part of an incredibly strong and deep team in a fast-paced, start-up like environment. This is an opportunity to work at the forefront of cloud evolution, enabling and extending our distributed systems on a massive scale across multiple data centers, multiple countries and millions of customers. It’s truly Day 1, and you will be part of it! What You Will Do: As an AWS Hardware Engineering Lab Engineer, you will sustain and improve a Lab environment that supports our customers. You will be a primary resolver for issues and support needs in our Lab infrastructure, able to install typical and non-standard server components and execute server and rack troubleshooting and repair. You need to be a “self-starter” with strong organizational skills, able to learn our processes so that you can reasonably prioritize your activities when you have a very long list of things that need to be done. You will receive new servers and components and properly rack them, getting them integrated into our lab infrastructure. You will be responsible for maintenance and organization of our server fleet, including cabling and cable management so that our racks are serviceable and organized. You will be responsible for server, component and supplies inventory and organization as well as for server, rack, and equipment commission and decommission. You will learn all aspects of the servers and test equipment you support. You will demonstrate ability to innovate and make decisions on your own, but also know how to take direction when it is given, paying attention to all details involved. You are able to execute multiple, simultaneous, small projects on your own and work with your manager in planning and executing larger local projects. You are familiar with basic hardware testing and able to execute manual and automated tests on the hardware. You act as an escalation point for junior technicians and are active in sharing your skills and teaching others what you know. Key job responsibilities As an L5 Lab Engineer II, you sustain and improve lab environments supporting AWS Hardware Engineering customers through tactical execution focused on larger goals within defined strategies. You independently install typical and non-standard server components, execute server and rack troubleshooting, and resolve technical issues with existing and prototype hardware. Operating as a self-starter with strong organizational skills, you prioritize activities across extensive task lists while learning lab processes to deliver results with limited guidance. You receive, rack, and integrate new servers and components into lab infrastructure, maintaining organization of the server fleet including cabling and cable management for serviceable racks. Responsible for server, component, and supplies inventory management, you handle commission and decommission activities while learning all aspects of supported servers and test equipment. You demonstrate ability to innovate and make independent decisions while taking direction when given, paying attention to all details. Working with customers, you diagnose software and hardware issues, deliver metrics and results, and make tactical trade-offs balancing time, quality, and resources to meet team goals with moderate impact. A day in the life Your day begins particpating the Lab's Daily Stand-Up, reviewing escalated tickets and customer-reported issues with your team. You prioritize your extensive task list, deciding which actions to take across multiple ongoing projects. Throughout the day, you independently troubleshoot and resolve technical issues with existing and prototype hardware, diagnosing software and hardware problems as the primary resolver for lab infrastructure support needs. You receive new servers and components, properly racking and integrating them into lab infrastructure while maintaining organized cabling and cable management. You manage server, component, and supplies inventory, handling commission and decommission activities. You make independent decisions on installation approaches for both typical and non-standard server components, innovating solutions while taking direction when provided and paying attention to all details. You work directly with customers, delivering metrics and results while continuously learning all aspects of the servers and test equipment you support.
