About The Position

Provides highly advanced (senior level) skills necessary to perform heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration (HVACR) repair and maintenance of mechanical equipment. Responsible for managing and supervising a department that oversees all air conditioning and related mechanical equipment and utility systems. Works under minimal supervision with extensive latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED, and successful completion of a post-secondary education in Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Program.
  • Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Universal Certification or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire date.
  • TDLRTexas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) Registered or Certified Air Conditioning and Refrigeration (ACR) Technician.
  • As condition of employment this position requires the applicant to be authorized to operate a University-Owned Vehicle for Official University Business. Per University of Texas System Policy 157, applicants will be subject to a motor vehicle record check for their most recent thirty-six (36) month history. Out of State Drivers are required to submit a 36-month history MVR from their prior State of residence(s).
  • Five (5) years of skilled/senior journeyman level experience as a refrigeration or HVAC mechanic including one (1) year in a supervisory capacity.
  • Skilled in the use of tools required to maintain and repair HVACR equipment.
  • Basic knowledge in building automation systems and HVAC controls.
  • Knowledge of general principles and theories of pressure, vacuum, vaporization, and heat conduction; and of safety regulations.
  • Ability to understand and follow directions; to work from blueprints and sketches; to maintain proper heating, ventilation, and air conditioning levels; to diagnose malfunctioning units; to maintain records; and to communicate effectively.

Nice To Haves

  • Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) Class A or B Air Conditioning and Refrigeration (ACR) Contractor License.
  • Experience obtained in a higher education environment or other facilities setting with similar mechanical and controls equipment.
  • Experience in reading and interpreting HVAC and related blueprints, drawings and/or diagrams.

Responsibilities

  • Functions as a working supervisor over HVACR mechanics and other employees engaged in installing, programming, maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing HVACR systems.
  • Assigns work orders.
  • Plans, directs, inspects and monitors work activities of all assigned staff; maintain records and provides reports as necessary.
  • Supervises and participates in the calibration, installation, maintenance, and repair of pneumatic thermostats, air handlers, refrigeration equipment, ice makers, compressors, fans, motors, water pumps, insulation, valves, boilers, and other mechanical equipment and devices.
  • Provides technical direction to other HVACR mechanics.
  • Coordinates, schedules, directs, and supervises HVACR projects, including emergency repairs.
  • Trains and instructs employees on proper work procedures and policies.
  • Assists in communicating and enforcing policies and procedures; resolving problems; addressing employee concerns and complaints.
  • Coordinates workflows and schedules to ensure deadlines are met, priorities are recognized, and policies/procedures are followed.
  • Participates in the interviewing and selection of job applicants and the performance evaluation of assigned employees; may recommend personnel actions (e.g., hiring, termination, promotion, discipline).
  • Inspects and performs preventive maintenance on HVACR systems, equipment, and components to ensure serviceable conditions; identifies necessary maintenance and repairs.
  • Coordinates and oversees construction/repair projects affecting HVACR system and specialized equipment to ensure conformance with university standards.
  • Collaborates in the planning, reviewing and selection of vendors, and adoption of specifications and plans for projects; consults with engineers as needed.
  • Monitors department inventory: initiates paperwork to purchase materials, supplies, and equipment.
  • Performs cost and time estimates on projects. Submits requests for purchases.
  • Knowledge of a computerized maintenance management system such as CMMS-TMA.
  • Completes and closes work-.orders and enters time worked and materials used on portable devices.
  • Prepares and compiles reports and maintains records.
  • Responds 24/7 to campus emergencies.
  • On call position and rotating shift is required.
  • Performs other duties as required.
