About The Position

The HVAC Technician will troubleshoot, repair and maintain heating, ventilation and refrigeration systems used in an underground and surface mining environment.

Requirements

  • High School graduate or equivalent.
  • Technical certificate from an accredited air conditioning and refrigeration training program.
  • Type I and type II refrigeration license to comply with Federal law 40CFR part 82, subpart F.
  • Must be able to access equipment information using electronic devices (i.e. laptop computer, tablet).
  • Computer literate with at least basic skills in Excel, Word and MS Outlook
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
  • ATF possessors clearance required.
  • Must complete MSHA 40-hour training or provide 5000-23 documentation of completed training.
  • Must pass physical and drug screen, and essential functions capacity test.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous experience in a mine setting preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Performs scheduled and un-scheduled maintenance activities.
  • Inspect, repair, modify and install HVAC equipment including refrigeration and air conditioning compressors, receivers, condensers, chillers, forced air converter units, pumps, automatic and hand valves, expansion valves and capillary tubes.
  • Conduct regular preventive maintenance inspections of refrigeration units, isolated heating and ventilating units, including boilers, gas, and electrically operated air conditioning equipment, and make necessary adjustments or repairs.
  • Repair or replace defective parts in units and equipment and their controls, including thermostats, automatic switches, fan controls, log switches, damper motors, louvers, relays, filters, controls, belts, compressors, heat exchangers, high limit controls, pressure controls, safety valves, and automatic gas valves.
  • Perform preventive maintenance on the underground refrigeration units.
  • Must learn and understand the underground chilled water system, add water system, and condenser water system. Must be able to install, replace, and service systems, components, and controls. Includes chillers, pumps, and all related components.
  • Maintenance of spray chambers. Install, repair, and start up spray chambers, including piping manifolds, pumps, chamber, and tank.
  • Use all related meters, instruments and tools required to properly work on refrigeration equipment and systems.
  • Repair and rebuild semi-hermetic reciprocating compressors and compressors for centrifugal refrigeration machines.
  • Install and calibrate systems; install copper and steel tubing and repair pipes and tubing as necessary
  • Flush heat exchangers and descale tubing
  • Rebuild pressure and temperature safety valves and water pumps.
  • Test and examine boiler operations.
  • Conduct boiler water quality test and treatment.
  • Adjust boiler burner combustion.
  • Electrical troubleshooting and repairs up to < 480v
  • Work with the Electrical Department team in the troubleshooting and repairs of all 480v and above equipment.
  • Read blueprints, drawings, and specifications to determine the operation, troubleshooting and repair of the chillers and related components and systems.
  • Machinery installation; Must know proper procedures for installation and alignment of components and electric motors.
  • Tests all equipment repairs as applicable.
  • Performs data input as required for inventory and cost control tracking.
  • Completes required maintenance work orders, reports and logs.
  • Maintain a high standard of housekeeping in the workplace.
  • Comply with applicable environmental laws and regulations. Conducts activities and work in an environmentally responsible manner. Is aware of procedures to minimize impacts to the environment.
  • Follows and understands MSHA rules and regulations, environmental rules and regulations, SOP and work area instructions, participates in safety and environmental activities. Leads by example by adhering to rules and regulations, and ensuring compliance to rules and regulations established by the Mine Operations department.
  • Must be able to work and communicate with other members of the work team.
  • Must be willing to comply with all company policies and procedures, especially with regard to Safety, Human Resources, and Environmental.
  • Participate in Risk Assessment activities as required.
  • Participate in the development of Standard Operating Procedures (SOP's) as required.
  • Must meet criteria established in the Maintenance Progression System (attached).
