About The Position

The HVAC Technician I responsibilities involves semi-skilled maintenance and repair work for the City of Dayton buildings, focusing on HVAC, electrical, and plumbing systems. Duties include repairing and servicing commercial and industrial heating and cooling systems, handling electrical tasks below the journey-worker level, and assisting electricians and HVAC Technician II as needed. The position requires performing various trade skills, mostly at the journey-worker level, under the general supervision of the Facility Maintenance Supervisor. Incumbent will operate, maintain, install, and repair a wide range of HVAC equipment and related systems. Key duties include servicing boilers, chillers, cooling towers, and pumps; cleaning and replacing filters, coils, and valves; testing and adjusting mechanical components; and working with modern HVAC systems like heat pumps and geothermal units. The role also requires performing plumbing and electrical repairs related to HVAC systems, including soldering, brazing, and troubleshooting circuits. Additional responsibilities include using building automation control software for diagnostics and energy management, performing preventative maintenance, maintaining records and inventories, coordinating with vendors and contractors, and assisting in reviewing project plans and construction work.

Requirements

  • Must possess a high school diploma (or G.E.D.), HVAC apprenticeship and trade certification or equivalent
  • 3 years of experience in commercial/industrial HVAC repair, operations, installation and maintenance
  • Must have an EPA CFC Universal Certificate at time of appointment
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license at time of appointment and maintain thereafter as a term and condition of continued employment
  • Must be a full-time permanent or part-time permanent employee in pay grade 120 (Wage) or below, pay grade 29 (Clerical) or below, or equivalent and been employed for 6 consecutive months by the City of Dayton in a classified Civil Service position
