About The Position

Under the direction of the Maintenance HVAC Supervisor, the HVAC Technical Trainer provides training, coaching, and mentoring to individuals seeking to become HVAC technicians. The trainer develops hands-on learning opportunities, demonstrates technical skills, ensures compliance with safety codes, and provides guidance in the use of HVAC tools, equipment, and systems. The position bridges instructional training with real-world application to prepare individuals for entry-level HVAC employment.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent (G.E.D.).
  • Three years of professional experience in heating, ventilation, and air conditioning.
  • Valid Arizona Department of Transportation Driver’s License.
  • Demonstrated ability to teach, mentor, or train others in a technical setting.
  • Strong knowledge of HVAC systems, tools, and safety practices.
  • Ability to explain and demonstrate technical concepts in clear, accessible language.
  • Skilled in operating HVAC tools including manifold gauges, vacuum pumps, and digital meters.
  • Knowledge of state and federal codes relating to HVAC systems.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills to engage and motivate trainees.
  • Ability to assess trainee progress and adapt instruction accordingly.
  • Proficiency with basic computer programs for record-keeping and reporting.
  • Ability to stand, walk, climb ladders, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl as needed during demonstrations.
  • Ability to lift and move up to 50 pounds regularly and occasionally up to 100 pounds.
  • Visual acuity to inspect trainee work and HVAC components.

Nice To Haves

  • Completion of HVAC trade school.
  • EPA Type II or Universal Certification.
  • Five years of commercial HVAC experience.
  • Prior experience as a technical trainer, mentor, or instructor.
  • Valid professional license or certificates in HVAC.

Responsibilities

  • Develops and delivers training modules on basic and intermediate HVAC concepts, including system installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair.
  • Provides hands-on demonstrations and guides trainees in safe and effective use of HVAC tools, gauges, meters, and related equipment.
  • Observes trainees’ work, provides feedback, and documents progress toward skill mastery.
  • Ensures trainees understand and apply OSHA, EPA, and Arizona State School Facilities Board (AZSFB) standards and codes.
  • Models proper record-keeping, work order completion, and inventory tracking.
  • Assists trainees in preparing for industry-recognized certifications (e.g., EPA 608).
  • Coordinates with Maintenance HVAC Supervisor to align training with district operational needs.
  • Maintains daily logs of training activities, skill assessments, and safety compliance.
  • Serves as a role model of professionalism, teamwork, and effective communication.
  • Performs HVAC-related tasks as necessary to demonstrate techniques and maintain operational readiness.
  • Other job related duties as assigned.
