About The Position

The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) is one of the largest, most complex agencies in the state, and has approximately 17,000 employees. It is responsible for ensuring the health, safety, and well-being of all North Carolinians, providing human service needs for special populations including individuals who are deaf, blind, developmentally disabled, and mentally ill, and helping poor North Carolinians achieve economic independence. The primary purpose of the Plant Maintenance Section is to ensure the successful operation of the physical plant and facility infrastructure. This position is a working supervisory position that receives general instructions from the plant manager that must be operationalized into specific work assignments. The HVAC supervisor coordinates the efforts of subordinate employees into prioritized work assignments including repairs to heating systems, air conditioning and refrigeration equipment, new installations of ductwork and air conditioning units, preventive maintenance, and other demands. This position also provides weekend and after hours service based on a 15 week on-call rotation. ALL employees of Murdoch Center are designated as ESSENTIAL for adverse weather and emergency events. Murdoch Developmental Center is a 24/7 state residential facility located in Butner, NC, near the Research Triangle area. Murdoch serves individuals with intellectual/developmental disabilities (I/DD). Murdoch is a caring community where professionals work with people of various ages, cognitive and functional abilities. Requirements

  • High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and up to three years of journey level experience in the installation, maintenance or repair of air conditioning chillers, air handling, chilled water distribution and control systems including one year at the journey level or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Requires current certification by the Environmental Protection Agency as a Type I, II, III or Universal technician as required by Title 40, Code of Federal Regulations part 82, subpart F.
  • driver’s license required

Nice To Haves

  • working knowledge of commercial / industrial refrigeration theory and considerable knowledge of the practices, methods, materials, and equipment used in the maintenance and repair of air conditioning and refrigeration equipment
  • knowledge of electricity to troubleshoot and repair electrical control circuits
  • ability to diagnose equipment malfunctions and prescribe repair procedures
  • experience in training, work planning, and in supervising employees
