About The Position

The primary function of this journeyman level position is repair, installation and maintenance of refrigeration, air conditioning and heating units in the residence halls. This position supports 9 residential communities accommodating approximately 8,000 residents.

Requirements

  • Requires technical knowledge in the field acquired through an apprenticeship, formal training programs, or on-the-job training.
  • Skill in troubleshooting and repair of HVAC-related electrical components.
  • Knowledge of standard practices, materials, tools and equipment of the HVAC trade.
  • Knowledge of local and state electrical codes, occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade.
  • Understands and follows oral and written instructions, reads and interprets blueprints, sketches and diagrams of residential buildings.
  • Sufficient verbal communication skills needed to communicate effectively with supervisors, staff and residents.
  • Ability to develop and maintain professional relationships with staff, residents and various customer groups, and demonstrate supportive involvement in work environment.
  • Proven ability to work as a team member, but also to make effective independent decisions and follow through on assignments.
  • Ability to efficiently utilize a variety of computer applications in the completion of assigned tasks, including but not limited to the work order system, payroll system, Microsoft Office Suite, UGA email and employee websites.
  • Climb stairs, ladders and scaffolds, work from a ladder or scaffold.
  • Bend at the waist and knees.
  • Work with arms and hands overhead for extended periods of time.
  • Use hand tools and power tools.
  • Lift and move items at least 50 pounds in weight, both assisted and unassisted.
  • Crawl to complete various tasks.
  • Perform work related duties outdoors in hot or cold weather.
  • Safely operate a UGA state vehicle.

Nice To Haves

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Minimum 4 years of experience as a journeyman level HVAC/Refrigeration Mechanic that may include apprenticeship or applicable vocational training; or equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Possess refrigerant handling certification (attend continuing education classes for renewal).

Responsibilities

  • HVAC/Refrigeration Maintenance
  • Responds to written and verbal, as well as computerized work order requests in a timely manner.
  • Must use and manipulate the web-based work order system to complete the following:
  • Installs, repairs, maintains and service refrigeration, air conditioning, heating and related equipment within the residence halls, including but not limited to exterior locations no higher than 20 feet.
  • Overhauls and service refrigeration, air conditioning, heating units by repairing, replacing and adjusting worn or broken parts on condensers, compressors, water and vacuum pumps.
  • Tests refrigeration equipment for leaks; repairs or adjusts valves, piping connections, fittings and couplings.
  • Removes and installs motors, thermostats and humidistats.
  • Adjusts pressure solenoid and expansion valves.
  • Adds gas to refrigeration unit, weighing carefully.
  • Recording amounts and types of refrigerant required by EPA.
  • Performs inspections related to preventive maintenance and schedule filter changes as necessary.
  • Shop Operations and Miscellaneous Duties
  • Safely operates and uses various tools associated with the HVAC trade.
  • Carries out work assignments with expected degree of independence and efficiency according to HVAC/Refrigeration practice with limited callbacks for additional repair.
  • Keeps shop area clean, inventoried, stocked and organized so that supplies can be easily located by other staff members.
  • Participates in maintenance after hours on-call program as required.
  • Performs summer work assignments including implementation of special projects and safety inspections; including the supervision of students and/or temporary employees on assigned projects.
  • Other duties consistent with the purpose and scope of this position, which may be assigned.
