About The Position

The HVAC Mechanic installs, maintains, troubleshoots, and repairs HVAC systems that support a regulated biomedical/primate facility. Equipment includes residential split systems (5-ton, 3.5-ton, 2.5-ton), mini-splits, exhaust/ventilation fans, and light commercial systems. The role performs air balancing/testing, ventilation adjustments, electrical troubleshooting at 220 V, and drives reliability through preventive maintenance, documentation, and safety compliance.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent; valid driver’s license.
  • 5+ years hands-on HVAC repair and installation experience.
  • Ability to read schematics and troubleshoot 220 V electrical and low-voltage control circuits.
  • Proficient diagnostics (refrigeration cycle, superheat/subcooling, airflow, static pressure).
  • Ventilation knowledge and practical air balancing/testing skills.
  • Solid brazing/soldering, leak detection, and vacuum/charging practices.
  • Computer literacy for CMMS/work orders; clear written notes and communication.
  • Professional, customer-service mindset; prioritizes safety and reliability.

Nice To Haves

  • EPA 608 certification (Type II or Universal).
  • Experience with commercial HVAC (RTUs, MAUs, large exhaust).
  • NATE, OSHA-10/30, aerial-lift/forklift certifications are a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Maintenance & Repair: Diagnose and repair split systems, mini-splits, air handlers, condensers, heat pumps, and ventilation/exhaust equipment; replace compressors, motors, contactors, capacitors, TXVs, boards, and sensors.
  • Installation: Install new and replacement systems (line sets, drains, condensate management, charging), set airflow/CFM and verify charge per manufacturer specs.
  • Ventilation & Air Balance: Perform airflow measurements, static pressure checks, duct inspections/sealing, and test/adjust/balance to meet area specs.
  • Electrical & Controls: Safely troubleshoot 220 V circuits, contactors, relays, transformers, and low-voltage controls/thermostats; read and interpret schematics/wiring diagrams.
  • Refrigerant Handling: Recover, evacuate, weigh in charge; leak check and document per EPA requirements (EPA 608 preferred).
  • Preventive Maintenance (PM): Execute PMs (filters, belts, coils, drains, bearings, lubrication, tighten electricals, verify superheat/subcooling), keep PMs on schedule.
  • Commercial Equipment Exposure: Support light commercial package units/RTUs, makeup air, ERVs/HRVs, and large exhaust fans; coordinate vendors for major work when needed.
  • Documentation & CMMS: Close work orders with accurate labor/parts/notes; update asset data, readings, and photos; maintain parts usage logs.
  • Safety & Compliance: Follow LOTO, PPE, ladder/roof safety, hot work, and chemical/refrigerant handling SOPs; maintain clean, safe work areas.
  • On-Call & Response: Participate in on-call rotation (nights/weekends/holidays); respond rapidly to comfort/critical calls (animal and lab-adjacent areas).
  • Collaboration: Coordinate with Husbandry, Veterinary, and Operations to schedule work and minimize disruption; communicate outages and ETAs.
