The HVAC Mechanic I performs skilled installation, maintenance, and repair of heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration systems in City facilities. This role follows safety standards while supporting senior technicians through preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, and documentation. Key responsibilities include servicing HVAC systems, such as air handlers, chillers, and ductwork, as well as replacing filters and cleaning coils. The mechanic assists in estimating labor and materials, maintains tools and inventory, and ensures compliance with relevant codes. The position requires a commitment to learning, using building automation systems, and interpreting blueprints for diagnostics and repairs, all crucial for maintaining comfort and efficiency in facilities. This position reports to an assigned supervisor.

  • Servicing HVAC systems, including air handlers, chillers, and ductwork.
  • Replacing filters and cleaning coils.
  • Assisting in estimating labor and materials.
  • Maintaining tools and inventory.
  • Ensuring compliance with relevant codes.
  • Documenting maintenance and repair work, parts used, and system performance.
  • Providing estimates for time and materials for routine work orders and small projects.
  • Installing, servicing, and maintaining refrigeration and HVAC systems.
  • Troubleshooting and repairing HVAC components such as motors, pumps, compressors, thermostats, coils, and electrical controls.
  • Reading and interpreting blueprints, wiring diagrams, and system schematics.
  • Using automated building management systems (BAS) and digital controls for system operation and performance checks.
  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Two (2) years of experience as a helper in a skilled trade; or an equivalent combination of training and experience; or completion of a vocational or apprentice program in plumbing maintenance or installation.
  • Valid Driver's License.
  • Strong understanding of HVAC systems, including chillers, cooling towers, boilers, and digital/pneumatic control systems.
  • Knowledge of tools, materials, safety procedures, and HVAC codes and standards.
  • Ability to diagnose system malfunctions and perform maintenance and repairs effectively.
  • Competent in reading technical manuals, schematics, and blueprints.
  • Capable of working independently or as part of a team under general supervision.
  • Ability to perform physically demanding tasks and work in confined spaces.
