About The Position

The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) is one of the largest, most complex agencies in the state, and has approximately 17,000 employees. It is responsible for ensuring the health, safety, and well-being of all North Carolinians, providing human service needs for special populations including individuals who are deaf, blind, developmentally disabled, and mentally ill, and helping poor North Carolinians achieve economic independence. The primary purpose of the Plant Maintenance Section is to ensure the successful operation of the physical plant and facility infrastructure. This position maintains and services all HVAC systems for Murdoch Center in addition to a satellite facility used for cold storage, the Oxford and Wright Path group homes, and the old ADATC facility consisting of seven buildings. This position repairs and provides preventive maintenance for all Murdoch Center’s heating, ventilating, air conditioning and refrigeration. New equipment is installed as required. On occasion, this position will assist with maintenance repairs and other types of work for other State agencies. ALL employees of Murdoch Center are designated as ESSENTIAL for adverse weather and emergency events.

Requirements

  • Candidates now meet the minimum qualifications of a position if they meet the minimum education and experience listed on the vacancy announcement.
  • High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and three years of progressive experience in the installation, maintenance or repair of air conditioning chillers, air handling, chilled water distribution and control systems or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Requires current certification by the Environmental Protection Agency as a Type I, II, III or Universal technician as required by Title 40, Code of Federal Regulations part 82, subpart F.

Nice To Haves

  • Candidates must have skill in using tools
  • Working knowledge of the construction and operation of centrifugal and reciprocal compressors
  • Ability to diagnose equipment malfunctions and to prescribe and perform repair procedures
  • Valid driver’s license are required.
  • Knowledge of the design and operation of pneumatic control systems.
  • Experience using and troubleshooting commercial DDC HVAC control systems.
  • Skilled experience in commercial hydronic air handling equipment.
