About The Position

HII is seeking a skilled Sr. HVAC Technician to join our team supporting the Commander, U.S. Fleet Forces (COMUSFLTFORCOM) Berthing and Messing Program, which operates duty crew berthing barges that provide essential living and working spaces for crews during ship overhaul and repair periods. Essential Job ResponsibilitiesAs a Sr. HVAC Technician in support organizational level (O-Level) maintenance and repairs, you will install, operate, troubleshoot, and maintain heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems aboard U.S. Navy berthing barges (APL) used to house ship’s personnel during maintenance availabilities. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, safety-focused, and experienced with marine or industrial HVAC systems including chilled water plants, air handlers, DX units, dehumidification, and ventilation equipment in a high-reliability environment.

Requirements

  • Must have a High School education, or Trade School or equivalent, and 6+ years of HVAC service experience in industrial, marine, shipyard, or heavy commercial environments with EPA Section 608 (Universal preferred)
  • Ability to troubleshoot mechanical/electrical systems using diagnostic tools.
  • Proficiency inspecting, operating, and maintaining HVAC equipment (chillers, compressors, condensers, evaporators, Direct expansion/split systems, air handling units, fan coils, make-up air units, exhaust/ventilation fans, and dehumidifiers) and fault diagnostics for mechanical, electrical, and control systems.
  • Ability to perform corrective actions, replace faulty components, and return systems to service with minimal downtime to include recover, recycle, and charge refrigerants per EPA 608; maintain accurate logs and chain-of-custody.
  • Experience conducting preventive maintenance schedules (filter changes, belt alignment, lubrication, coil cleaning, refrigerant checks, leak detection, and sensor calibration)
  • Conduct airflow measurements, temperature/humidity checks, and equipment performance tests.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and OEM specifications.
  • Familiar with OSHA, shipyard, and Navy safety practices (LOTO, confined space, fall protection, PPE).
  • Must be able to lift, carry and transport heavy equipment and boxes. The exact weight requirements will be determined by the specific job, but no less than 50 lbs.
  • Able to work on and climb ladders, work in extreme temperature environments, aboard ships, in shipyards, under industrial conditions and in confined spaces.
  • Able to perform other duties as required which may involve high heat, humidity, noise and dirty conditions, working aloft or over the sides of vessels.
  • May ride ships at sea for extended periods.
  • May require wearing a respirator.
  • Must consistently wear required PPE (hard hat, safety glasses, gloves, safety boots, fall protection) and follow program safety training/briefings.
  • There will be 10 % Periodic travel to Kittery, ME and Groton/New London, CT for site inspections and coordination.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience supporting U.S. Navy berthing barges (APL) or afloat platforms.
  • Knowledge of NAVSEA drawings/specs and shipyard practices.
  • Experience with other primary and auxiliary shipboard systems
  • Familiar with OSHA-10/30, shipyard, and Navy safety practices (LOTO, confined space, fall protection, PPE).
  • Work with thermostats, BAS/PLC interfaces, and control loops to maintain setpoints, alarms, and efficiency.
  • Experience with BAS/PLC controls (Honeywell, Johnson Controls, Siemens, etc.).
  • Brazing/welding certifications for refrigeration piping; R410A/R134a systems experience.
  • Secret clearance or Secret eligible
