About The Position

Nebraska Wesleyan University has an opening for a full-time, HVAC Technician for the Heating Plant. The essential duties include preventive maintenance on HVAC Equipment, trouble shoot and repair HVAC equipment and associated equipment, operate Johnson Controls HVAC software, maintaining accurate logs and records for work time and materials, perform chemical testing on the feed water for boilers and water treatment systems, repair steam line and condensate lines, and other duties as assigned. Shift Work: During the non-heating season, most general maintenance duties are performed during the day shift 6:00 am – 2:30 pm, Monday through Friday. During the heating season, shifts may be adjusted to monitor and operate boilers and heating equipment. There is an on-call system in place. The maintenance team members take turns being on call.

Requirements

  • Competitive applicants will have a variety of skills with a high aptitude in HVAC operation and repairs
  • Must be able to use various hand tools such as wrenches, grinders, drills, measuring devices etc., and use tools safely without injury to self, others or property
  • Must have EPA freon gas certification or ability to obtain certification within 6 months
  • Able to or learn how to cut, thread, and fit pipes. Should be able to solder and sweat copper pipes.
  • Must be flexible and able to respond to changes in weather conditions, equipment, and operational conditions
  • Must be able to work as part of a team as well as independently
  • This position will require the possession of a valid driver's license
  • Working knowledge of computers for tasks including HVAC controls, reading email, logging hours and entering work order information is necessary
  • Ability to perform work with prolonged standing, bending, and working in cramped areas and working on roofs, from ladders, man-lifts and on scaffolding at various heights
  • Ability to do physical work, including lifting, climbing, regular use of stairs, and lifting up to 50 pounds on a regular basis
  • The position also works with potentially dangerous commercial tools and equipment in installing, maintaining and repairing systems
  • Will be required to work on-call outside of regular hours with on-call system in place
  • Prior to employment, applicants will have to successfully complete a criminal background check, pre-employment drug test, and pre-employment physical as well as possess a valid operator's driving license.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure HVAC equipment running efficiently
  • Monitor building temperatures and adjust as necessary to keep building occupants comfortable
  • Monitor operation of boilers and related equipment
  • Maintain accurate logs and records
  • Perform chemical testing on the feed water for boilers and records results
  • Maintain boiler‑related equipment; makes repairs and requests necessary parts
  • Perform carpentry, janitorial, painting, and plumbing duties related to operation and maintenance of the boilers and related boiler equipment
  • Perform general preventive maintenance duties including, but not limited to, changing/cleaning filters, cleaning coils, belts, cleaning and operating greenhouse heating and ventilation
  • Train other staff to run and maintain HVAC equipment
  • Assist contractors when needed for equipment repairs and changes
  • Perform other work as assigned; includes snow removal as part of a team
