About The Position

HV Power Electronics Engineer Location: Concord, NCCompany: GM Performance Power Units (GM PPU) Drive the Future of Formula 1 Hybrid Performance at GM PPU! As a High Voltage Power Electronics Engineer, you’ll take technical ownership for the design and validation of inverter systems powering our high-speed electric machines. You’ll join a multidisciplinary team of specialists across controls, energy storage, and motor design, all working at the leading edge of motorsport electrification.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Electronics, or related discipline.
  • 5+ years of relevant experience in high-voltage inverter or converter design, ideally within automotive, motorsport, or aerospace applications.
  • Expertise in SiC and IGBT-based power stages, gate driver topologies, and protection circuitry.
  • Proficiency in motor control strategies (FOC, SVM) and their hardware implementation.
  • Knowledge of component characterization for performance and reliability
  • Experience analyzing and designing for inverter fault scenarios
  • Strong understanding of designing for EMC compliance, insulation coordination, and safety standards for high-voltage systems (ISO 6469, IEC 60664, etc.).
  • Experience with optimizing high current PCB layouts to mitigate EMI and minimize parasitics
  • Understanding of magnetics, specifically inductors and transformers and their role in converter and inverter systems.
  • Hands-on experience with prototype validation, HV lab testing, and instrumentation for dynamic electrical characterization.

Nice To Haves

  • Exposure to motorsport or high-performance EV inverter architectures.
  • Familiarity with DC-DC converter integration, power distribution, and packaging for high power density.
  • Experience with thermal management, SiC device characterization, or resonant/soft-switching techniques.
  • Knowledge of system-level integration across MGU-K, battery, and control unit domains.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the design and development of high-voltage inverter hardware for advanced hybrid power units, from concept through track deployment.
  • Develop detailed electrical, mechanical, and thermal specifications for inverter subsystems, ensuring compliance with FIA regulations and internal safety standards.
  • Perform analytical and finite element simulations of switching behavior, losses, and device stress using tools (MATLAB/Simulink / LTSpice / PLECs / PSIM).
  • Collaborate with control, thermal, and mechanical teams to optimize inverter performance under race-duty transient conditions.
  • Support trackside and dyno testing activities, including data analysis, fault diagnosis, and continuous improvement of HV system robustness.
  • Engage suppliers for semiconductor, capacitor, and busbar technologies, driving technical alignment and component innovation.
  • Contribute to design reviews, documentation, and lessons-learned capture within a rigorous configuration management process.
