Under limited supervision and with considerable independence, the Human Subject Research Specialist II (HSRS II) will work closely with the Principal Investigator, Director, and research team to implement large community-based pediatric asthma interventions in the city of Rochester, while also providing research data support for several ongoing NIH-funded pediatric asthma studies. The HSRS II is a member of a cross-functional team where teamwork, collaboration, challenges and continuous learning are the standard. The HSRS II will gather information, analyze and interpret data, and report findings. The HSRS II will perform daily data review/audit, and statistical analysis of the research data, disseminate information and assist with formulating goals, protocols and information gathering methods. The position requires knowledge of organization’s policies, procedures, and research operations. The position requires attention to detail, awareness of time-sensitive work, and a high level of organizational and communication skills. The HSRS II will follow University Research Guidelines for Human Subjects Research and will demonstrate ICARE values in each of the major responsibilities.

Requirements

2 years of relevant experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Demonstrate excellent interpersonal and communication skills, in interactions with participants, extramural agencies, officials and physicians.
Must be flexible, empathetic, and able to engage effectively with diverse populations.
Demonstrate efficiency in prioritizing assignments, as well as skill in proactively and independently resolving problems in the field, and recommending/implementing continuous quality improvements.
Possess good knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
Some evenings and weekends are required.
Must have reliable/efficient transportation to travel to schools, homes, pediatric offices and other local sites.

Nice To Haves

Spanish Speaking is a plus.
Experience with Microsoft Access, REDCap, database development or SPSS.
SOCRA - Certification In Clinical Research upon hire preferred
Association of Clinical Research Professionals (ACRP) upon hire preferred

Responsibilities

Oversee the primary outcome data collection for NIH-funded research protocols.
Track follow-up time points, analyze volume of follow-ups on a daily basis to prioritize efforts, and determine next steps for difficult-to-reach participants using independent judgment.
Train and oversee research staff in follow-up data collection process, ensuring accurate execution through validity checks and requesting clarification when needed.
Organize and clean study data prior to analysis.
Compile monthly, annual, and regulatory reports (NIH, DSMB and RSRB/IRB) and provide weekly updates to PI, director and senior HSRS regarding follow-up survey progress.
Assist as needed with follow-up data collection from interviews, surveys and other sources, including contacting primary care offices to obtain information from medical records, visiting schools to obtain breathing measurements, and collecting school health records.
Hiring, training and supervision of research staff.
Assist with hiring and supervision of 10-12 part-time student research assistants.
Train students on all aspects of asthma interventions and supervise daily activities by delegating tasks and monitoring progress.
Conduct bi-monthly student meetings, and meet with students individually at least monthly.
Supports team in full-time staff hiring and training.
Screen and enroll participants into NIH-funded research studies
Supports the team in large-scale screening efforts each year, providing training on screening tasks, setting goals, reviewing progress, and providing support.
Conduct telephone calls to screen potential participants for eligibility and interest in asthma study, schedule home visits (or Zoom visits) with family, and coordinate schedules with other staff to conduct visits.
Conduct interviews with families, administer surveys, and collect other data such as breathing measurements (spirometry, eNO), height/weight, and saliva samples from child/adolescent participants.
Ensure comfort and accuracy of data collection as well as informed consent.
Provide enrollment updates at weekly study meeting, and provide updates daily to study Director and Sr. HSRS.
Compile and disseminate information learned from research studies, and provide professional direction within the projects
Meet with PI, Director and Sr. HSRS to formulate project goals and analysis needs.
Perform data analyses based on information needs using SPSS, excel, or similar software and present findings to PI, senior specialists, study team, and stakeholders.
Develop effective visualizations of data for internal use and presentations at local and national meetings, synthesizing information into a simplified format for ease of audience understanding.
Attend weekly study meetings and discuss study related issues and provide insightful suggestions for improvement.
Conduct literature reviews as needed on related topics, and attend pertinent meetings, seminars and classes to stay up-to-date in the field.
Develop and maintain multiple research databases, run data reports, conduct analysis
Meet with PI, director, and Sr. HSRS to formulate information gathering methods and develop databases.
Independently create and maintain several databases for data collection as well as tables and coding schematic for the databases.
Troubleshoot problems and resolve database issues promptly.
Perform validation of all data that is obtained to ensure integrity.
Assist in validating data quality and identifying anomalies and errors.
Advise, assist, and train research team on using the databases appropriately and correcting data inaccuracies.
Routinely extract data and run reports from databases, and present finding to PI and Sr. HSRS.
General study-related needs
Communication with study participants, stakeholders, and other study-related personnel.
Organize subject honoraria and mail gift cards to families.
Create and mail study newsletters to families and nurses.
Communicate with school nurses, school administrators, and medical providers regarding study.
Organize subject samples and mail samples to laboratory for analysis; maintain sample results.
Attend weekly study meetings and discuss study related issues and provide insightful suggestions for improvement.
