About the position

PlayCV is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization whose mission is to create opportunities that foster academic and personal growth through diverse enrichment activities and joyful play for all students. We strive to bring enrichment programs that both introduce and deepen subject matters of interest. Our intention is to foster team and individual growth while developing social interactions. All of our programs take place onsite at one of Castro Valley Unified School District’s elementary or middle schools. We are seeking a Human Resources Manager to oversee all aspects of HR practices, processes and procedures. This role is responsible for overseeing the talent acquisition, onboarding and training of our people while directly responsible for employee relations, compensation, payroll and benefits, and ensuring compliance with employment laws and regulations. The ideal candidate will report into the CFO and have one direct report. They will be responsible for fostering a positive workplace culture, ensuring legal compliance, and enhancing employee engagement and performance.

Responsibilities

  • Manage Recruiting Coordinator, ensuring a smooth, efficient hiring process and new hire experience for part-time and full-time hourly employees.
  • Optimize sourcing strategies for high-volume, seasonal hiring including local job fair events.
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state and local employment laws.
  • Prepare bi-weekly and off-cycle payroll for Finance review for 130+ employee-base (hourly). Ensure timekeeping accuracy coordinated with labor law compliance.
  • Manage 401k plan.
  • Ensure HR policies and Employee Handbook are updated and compliant.
  • Manage Open Enrollment and Benefits Administration and maintain broker relationships.
  • Manage Worker Compensation claims and conduct annual audits.
  • Ensure completion of all staff and manager training, including safety and compliance.
  • Serve as a trusted advisor to managers and staff on HR policies, conflict resolution, and performance issues.
  • Support a positive workplace culture through engagement initiatives, feedback channels, and team-building activities.
  • Address employee concerns with empathy and professionalism, ensuring fair and consistent practices.
  • Support managers in performance review processes and corrective action plans.
  • Identify training needs and coordinate succession planning opportunities.
  • Promote career growth pathways for staff seeking advancement.
  • Partner with leadership to align HR initiatives with organizational goals.
  • Analyze HR metrics (turnover, recruitment efficiency) to recommend improvements.
  • Manage HR budget and resources effectively.
  • Other projects as directed by CEO/CFO.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of progressive Human Resources and Payroll experience, including 1 year in a managerial role.
  • Knowledge of employment law and nonprofit HR best practices.
  • Experience with high-volume, part-time/hourly workforce recruitment and management.
  • Proficiency in Paylocity HRIS and ATS platforms.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with ability to be relatable to all levels in the organization.

Nice-to-haves

  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources or related field.
  • SHRM or PHR certification.
  • Background in education, nonprofits, or youth-serving organizations.
