The City of Plymouth is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Human Resources Intern to support day-to-day HR functions including recruitment and retention, HRIS and payroll, labor and employee relations, benefits, safety and risk management. This position will assist with various HR tasks and provide essential support to the HR department to ensure smooth operations. This position will work on-site for an average of 20 hours per week. The position will have flexibility in schedule within the regular business hours of 8:00 am - 4:30 pm, Monday - Friday. Ideal candidates will work a full year to experience the annual cycle of human resources work.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated ability to perform in accordance with the City of Plymouth's CIVIC values (customer focus, integrity, visionary, inclusion and connection) and comfort with supporting and advancing the city council's strategic priorities.
  • Current or recent enrollment in a graduate or undergraduate degree program with an interest and aptitude to work in Human Resources.
  • Must have ability to work independently, have high attention to detail and take initiative on projects.
  • Must have excellent communication and coordination skills and proven ability to work effectively with people of all backgrounds and identities.
  • Exceptional organizational skills with the ability to multi-task and manage multiple processes, programs, and procedures simultaneously.
  • Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information appropriately.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and internet applications.

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with municipal government operations.
  • Familiarity with HRIS (Human Resources Information System).
  • Knowledge of US labor laws.
  • Other paid or volunteer experience in an office setting.

Responsibilities

  • Support recruitment efforts by maintaining up-to-date job descriptions, posting job advertisements, scheduling interviews and participating in the interview process.
  • Maintain communication with candidates throughout the recruitment process.
  • Coordinate and conduct background checks, as well as process drug screenings for potential employees.
  • Organize and maintain personnel files and other HR records, ensuring compliance with legal requirements.
  • Manage employment verification requests and assist with verifications of employment.
  • Support special HR projects and contribute to ongoing departmental initiatives.
  • Collect and analyze data for market surveys, researching wage and benefit trends.
  • Assist with online benefit enrollments, working directly with benefit carriers.
  • Verify the accuracy of invoices related to employee benefits and other HR services.
  • Contribute to the annual open enrollment process for employee benefits.
  • Address employee inquiries related to HR policies and procedures in a timely and clear manner.
  • Perform general office duties, including data entry, answering phones, and maintaining records retention systems.
  • Provide back-up administrative support to other HR team members and perform other duties as assigned.
