About The Position

The Academic Decathlon Coach is assigned the task of preparing team members for multiple choice tests in science, math, economics, social science, literature, art and music. Team members must also be prepared to compete in the essay, speech, and interview categories. Coaches are expected to present materials, practice exams and to conduct discussions and presentations during weekly practice sessions. Academic Decathlon team members need to be prepared for testing in multiple subject areas that correlate with a major theme. The theme changes yearly. Practices can begin as early as May (if materials are available) and run through January of the following academic school year. State qualifiers will extend their season into March. NOTE: Assistant coach performs duties that support the head coach. Assigned responsibilities are based on employee expertise, availability, and program objectives. Duties may be reassigned or altered to meet current and emerging organizational needs.

Requirements

  • Valid driver’s license.

  • Experience in academic decathlon either as a high school or college student.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in education or related field.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with regular weekly practices.
  • Attend all competitions with the team members.
  • Assist with actively recruiting new members.
  • Be available to team members in need of additional assistance.
  • Adhere by the rules set by DMPS and the United States Academic Decathlon Team organization.
  • Attend district-wide meetings as requested.
  • Attend work on a prompt and regular basis.
  • Maintain confidentiality.
  • Maintain satisfactory and harmonious working relationships with the public, students, and other employees.
  • Assist with other duties as may be assigned.
