The HR Manager - Assistant to Director at the University of Washington plays a crucial role in managing all aspects of Academic Human Resources (AHR) and HR-related duties for the School of Aquatic & Fishery Sciences (SAFS). Reporting directly to the Administrator and taking direction from the Director, this position involves working closely with faculty, staff, and students to ensure compliance with university policies and procedures while providing expert advice and support in HR operations, particularly using the Workday system. The HR Manager is responsible for overseeing a wide range of HR activities, including recruitment, appointments, visa management for international scholars, and faculty governance, while also ensuring operational efficiency and strategic planning within the department.

  • Provide key Academic Human Resource Management support to ensure compliance with personnel policies and procedures.
  • Manage high volume department academic human resources processes for various faculty types.
  • Administer the appointments, reappointments, professorship and merit reviews process.
  • Manage the faculty recruitment and appointment process from initial search to final hire.
  • Ensure compliance with University, State and Federal hiring practices during faculty recruitments.
  • Interpret University and COE policies and procedures related to Academic Human Resources.
  • Manage applications and renewals for international visas, including J-1 and H-1B.
  • Provide guidance on HR-related leave circumstances and best practices.
  • Counsel employees and supervisors to resolve employee relations issues.
  • Facilitate the hiring and onboarding/outboarding process for staff and students.
  • Bachelor's degree in social sciences, business, public administration, English, scientific or related field.
  • Three or more years of experience working at the departmental level in human resources.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to maintain systems to track information.
  • Strong project management and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to maintain harmonious working relationships and address complex issues.
  • Proficiency with Workday HR and Work Finance, and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Ability to interpret and navigate transactional processes in the Workday system.
  • Experience with UW administrative systems and understanding of UW personnel policy.
