About The Position

The Student Pathways Program is a 9-12 month rotational program designed to provide comprehensive knowledge of HR fundamentals, various HR functional areas, and hands-on HR work experience in each of our central, academic, and business units on campus. Rotation 1 (a fully immersive 12 week experience during the summer) is a unique opportunity to gain experience with the various HR functions within UHR, our central HR unit on campus. Functional areas that interns will rotate through include: Talent Acquisition Employee and Labor Relations Faculty & Staff Disability Services Organizational Effectiveness UI Wellness Workforce Operations Benefits Compensation and Classification Payroll Workers' Compensation Rotations 2 and 3 (during each of the academic semesters) will provide interns with the opportunity to receive hands-on HR work experience in both an academic and business unit on campus. Interns will interact with multiple departments, employee populations, and unit leaders while assisting with HR projects, job duties, and tasks. This opportunity is open to current University of Iowa students in their junior or senior year pursuing a bachelor’s degree in business administration, human resources, or related field; or to recent University of Iowa graduates who have completed a bachelor’s degree in business administration, human resources, or a related field in the past 12 months. Anticipated program start date is June 2026. Required summer availability is between 30-40 hours per week and 10-20 hours per week during the academic year. Requirements

  • Must be a current University of Iowa student in their Junior or Senior year working towards a bachelor’s degree in business administration, human resources, or a related field; or Be a recent University of Iowa graduate within the past 12 months and hold a bachelor’s degree in business administration, human resources, or a related field.
  • Strong verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong organization skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to manage sensitive and confidential information.
  • Ability to foster a welcoming and respectful workplace environment while recognizing personal differences
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office.
  • Proven capability to handle multiple tasks and projects autonomously with limited direction and oversight.
  • Availability for potential full-time role in 2026.

Responsibilities

  • HR Planning and Development: Learn and assist in organizing HR planning functions within the department and/or unit.
  • Communication: Learn and understand UI HR policies, practices, and procedures. Gather information, provide resources, and respond to HR inquiries as directed.
  • Talent Management and Engagement: Learn, understand, and assist in the support of recruitment and employee onboarding processes. May assist supervisors and local HR team with performance management tools and resources.
  • HR Program Administration and Operations: Assist in gathering and preparing HR data as directed. Learn and provide support in the implementation of HR initiatives. Assist in initiating HR transactions. Assist in maintaining confidential personnel records and reports.
  • Compliance with Policies, Laws, and Regulations: Generate and distribute reports. Gather information and monitor compliance requirements as directed.
