About The Position

The HR Business Partner at the University of Michigan's School of Dentistry serves as a key point of contact for employee inquiries and concerns, fostering a positive work environment and supporting various HR functions. Requirements

  • A Bachelor's degree in human resources, business administration, or a related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Three (3) years of human resources management experience, including recruiting, performance management, coaching, and consulting with managers and employee relations.
  • Immigration and visa processing experience.
  • Demonstrated written and verbal communication skills with all levels of stakeholders.
  • Intermediate proficiency with Google Suite and Microsoft Office applications.
  • Customer focus, teamwork, flexibility, and creativity while working in a deadline-driven environment.
  • Working knowledge of relevant federal and state employment laws.
  • Ability to work independently and collaborate in a team environment and handle sensitive and protected information with confidentiality.
  • Experience interpreting and implementing HR procedures.
  • Experience using HR management systems and data query tools.
  • Knowledge of University of Michigan's policies and procedures.
  • Experience in a higher education environment. Experience in facilitation and training, including the ability to present at all levels.
  • Experience managing collaborative projects.
  • Experience with FMLA, ADA, HIPPA, FERPA, and other HR policies.
  • Society of Human Resources Management Certification (SHRM-CP or SHRM-SCP) or HR Certification Institute (PHR or SPHR).

Responsibilities

  • Partner and serve as a point of contact for employee inquiries and concerns, providing guidance and resolving issues with various units in the School of Dentistry.
  • Foster a positive and inclusive work environment through effective communication and conflict resolution.
  • Assist senior HR partners with investigations and provide recommendations on confidential employee relations matters.
  • Assist with ongoing transitions, grievance processes, and other union interactions as needed.
  • Support the performance management process, including goal setting, performance appraisals, and development plans.
  • Assist managers in addressing performance issues and developing improvement plans when needed.
  • Evaluate requests for the appropriate job classification and salary range. Work with units on salary offers for their candidates.
  • Assist in the development and execution of recruitment strategies to attract and retain top talent.
  • Assist in facilitating the onboarding process for new hires, ensuring a smooth transition into the department.
  • Provide education or guidance on the various School of Dentistry resources and operating systems.
  • Autonomously handle the preparation of appointment changes, leave requests, terminations, additional pay requests, and multiple job changes for faculty and staff with your units and the Shared Services Center (SSC).
  • Independently oversee the status of appointments, visa matters, and other HR-related issues, including policy changes, and provide recommendations for the most suitable actions to be taken.
  • Work with Academic units to ensure forms and steps are completed in a timely manner and partner with the International Center to provide updates and follow up as needed.
  • Ensure compliance with university policies, federal and state employment laws, and industry regulations.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date employee records and documentation.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of HR policies and procedures.
  • Participate in HR projects and initiatives aimed at improving departmental processes and employee engagement.
  • Participate in departmental teams to identify enhancements and efficiencies in processes.
  • Develop resources such as job aids, 'How To' documents, and procedural guidelines to document policies, procedures, and best practices.
  • Collaborate with fellow HR team members to ensure cross-training and coverage during vacations, sick leaves, or busier periods throughout the year.
  • Provide support for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) programs, and activities.
  • Be prepared to undertake other tasks as assigned.
