The Academic Advisor provides support for student recruitment, retention and graduation of undergraduate students in the College of Health & Public Service. This role involves guiding students through degree requirements, course planning and graduation processes while promoting student engagement and academic success. The advisor serves as a subject matter expert for HPS majors, supports curriculum development and helps develop other materials for student success.

  • Provides holistic advising services for students regarding degree requirements, course planning and graduation processes, as well as extended advising for students on academic probation.
  • Promotes student engagement and self-efficacy alongside degree program and career guidance.
  • Represents HPS programs for assigned advising initiatives, including group advising sessions, new student orientations and other informational and recruiting functions.
  • Conducts quality checks on advising-related projects and outcomes.
  • Helps develop communications, recruitment collaterals, and program materials aligned with degree requirements.
  • Reviews student progression and orientation audits to streamline administrative processes and ensure compliance with mandates.
  • Acts with initiative, is punctual and flexible to accommodate the needs of the department.
  • Participates in special projects as assigned in cooperation with others in the department and college to help benefit recruitment, retention and graduation efforts.
  • Bachelor's degree and two years of experience in student affairs, student services, counseling, or professional academic advising.
  • Strong presentation, conflict resolution and problem-solving abilities.
  • Skilled in engaging differing populations through effective verbal and written communication across internal and external groups.
  • Proven ability to build and maintain collaborative working relationships.
  • Strong proficiency in academic advising and career outcomes with a deep understanding of student development and support strategies.
  • Thorough knowledge of university policies and procedures, with the ability to quickly assimilate new institutional guidelines.
  • Experienced in using a wide range of advanced computer applications and systems.
  • Considerable experience and knowledge of student advising practices, including familiarity with university and college policies and procedures.
  • Ability to effectively interpret and communicate academic information across a wide range of majors and disciplines.
  • In-depth understanding of degree programs, with a strong attention to detail.
  • Excellent communication skills, along with proven self-direction.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • A commitment to student success and collegial engagement, with a passion for fostering active involvement among students and colleagues.
