About The Position

This position reports to the Director of Advanced Research Computing, Security, and Information Management (ARCSIM) and will help support the needs of the UMaine research community and its collaborators by enabling and growing the use of high-performance computing in the research enterprise. ARCSIM is a component of the Office of the Vice President for Research and Dean of the Graduate School. The position will have an active role in shaping what HPC resources are available, who can access those resources, how to get data to those resources, and how research is conducted, with careful consideration of security requirements and policies. Further, the position will support research computing activities at the Green Energy and Materials: Research Factory of the Future (GEM: FoF), which is an innovative research facility, currently under construction, that will focus on revolutionizing manufacturing through AI-enabled, large-scale bio-based advanced manufacturing. Typical hiring range is $60,000 to $70,000 commensurate with qualifications and experience. Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, computer engineering, or relevant discipline.
  • At least one year of experience performing Linux system administration duties.
  • Familiarity with cluster configuration and management tools (e.g. SLURM, Ansible).
  • Knowledge of or experience in networking systems, including DNS, HTTP, and TCP/IP.
  • Experience with secure data processing and storage.
  • Experience with diagnosing system and application software problems.
  • Knowledge of infrastructure for migrating jobs between on-premise clusters and remote/cloud computing platforms.
  • Ability and willingness to learn new technologies and remain current in developing trends in the HPC community.
  • Highly developed organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Effective oral, written, and electronic communication skills.
  • Certification such as GIAC, Certified in Cybersecurity (ISC2 CC), Security+, or agreed upon equivalent is expected to be accomplished within the first three years of employment.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience building, configuring, and administering Linux clusters.
  • Experience with parallel file systems (e.g. Lustre, GPFS, BeeGFS, Ceph).
  • Familiarity with data security standards (e.g. NIST-800-171).
  • Familiarity with streaming data, database, and/or data lake integration (e.g. Kafka, Apache Spark, Minio, Apache Hive).
  • Knowledge of Linux kernel internals, and kernel modules.
  • Strong scripting abilities in Python, R, and/or bash.
  • Familiarity with version control using Git.
  • Demonstrated skills automating or optimizing software, code, and/or processes.
  • Experience maintaining the stability and security of Linux systems and environments.
  • Experience managing GPU clusters for AI/ML jobs (e.g. NVIDIA, AMD).
  • Experience with virtualization tools, containers, and/or orchestration (Docker, Apptainer, Kubernetes).
  • Experience processing, managing or storing secure data (e.g., ITAR, CUI, PII, PHI, health records, medical data) on a shared HPC system.
  • US Person.
