About The Position

The position involves operating electric, diesel-electric, or gas-turbine-electric locomotives for Railserve, a leading provider of in-plant rail switching and material handling services. The role requires interpreting train orders, signals, and regulations while ensuring the safe and timely transportation of freight. The successful candidate will be responsible for inspecting locomotives, assisting in training new employees, and adhering to safety protocols.

Requirements

• High School diploma or equivalent.
• Military experience is helpful.
• Must be extremely dependable and punctual in attendance.
• Reliable transportation to work every day is required.
• Good communication skills, both verbal and written.
• Ability to engage in active listening and assess multiple tasks.
• Ability to work well with others as part of a team.

Responsibilities

• Inspect locomotive before operating to verify specified fuel, sand, water, and other supplies.
• Receive starting signal from foreman or helper and move controls to operate locomotive.
• Interpret train orders, signals, and rules to operate locomotive safely and efficiently.
• Assist crew leader in training new employees.
• Observe track to detect obstructions and ensure safe operations.
• Prepare reports to explain accidents, unscheduled stops, or delays.
• Lubricate moving parts of locomotive as needed.
• Handle train equipment safely using independent or automatic brakes.
• Operate hand or ground throw switches, derails, gates, etc.
• Control movement of equipment by radio, hands, and lantern.
• Apply and release hand brakes to secure or move equipment.
• Handle air hoses, wheel chocks, and coupling/uncoupling of rail cars.
• Wear required personal protective equipment and follow safety rules.
