About The Position

House Supervisors have clinical and administrative accountability for their areas of responsibility on their assigned shift. Areas of responsibility include nursing, clinical and ancillary departments. Administrative responsibilities include management of finances, human resources, staffing, patient/staff emergencies, shift operations, complaints, miscellaneous interdepartmental coordination, performance improvement, technology, and strategy. The House Supervisor possesses broad based clinical and leadership skills including communication, mentoring, advocacy, systems thinking, critical thinking, accountability of self, peers and staff, and establishment of a healthy work environment. Functions as a leader and role model in accordance with the American Nurses Association (ANA) Nursing Administration Scope and Standards of Practice, ANA Code of Ethics for Nursing, and Chapter 6 of the Iowa Nursing Practice Act for Registered Nurses.

Requirements

  • Must be a graduate of an accredited school of nursing and currently licensed to practice as a Registered Nurse in Iowa.
  • Minimum of two years of previous clinical experience.
  • Must have demonstrated organizational abilities and strong interpersonal skills.
  • Must be able to read, speak, and write fluent English.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing preferred
  • Certification in specialty area and/or nursing leadership preferred.
  • Previous nursing leadership experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Assessment, Problem, and Outcome Identification: Collects and analyzes comprehensive data pertinent to the issues, situations, or trends and identifies expected outcomes, communication needs and areas of accountability. Systematically collects relevant data. Analyzes and interprets data to identify significant issues, problems, or trends. Determines expected outcomes based on data analysis. Communicates data review, analysis results and expectations. Identifies structure of accountability and reports lack of follow through or accountability to manager(s) responsible for department(s).
  • Planning and Implementation: Assists with the development, maintenance, evaluation and communication of organizational systems to support planning and implementation for the delivery of care and completion of job duties/functions. Assists with development of a plan that prescribes strategies and alternatives to meet expected outcomes. Assists with interdisciplinary collaboration and staff participation in decision making. Coordinates and ensures efficient implementation of plan. Identifies when decisions can be collaborative or independent. Assists staff in developing critical thinking skills that are utilized in decision making.
  • Evaluation: Assists with the evaluation of progress towards attainment of outcomes. Assists with the evaluation of the effectiveness of planned strategies in relation to nurse-sensitive indicators, clinical indicators, job responsibilities, stakeholder responses, and attainment of expected outcomes. Disseminates results of the evaluation analyses. Uses data generated from evaluation to develop or recommend innovative changes including policies, procedures, or protocols.
  • Quality of Care and Practice: Systematically enhances the quality and effectiveness of nursing/clinical practice, nursing/clinical/ancillary service administration, and delivery of services. Integrates research findings into practice by creating a supporting environment for knowledge based on nursing/department-specific research. Communicates and enforces WHC policies and assures the utilization of evidence-based best practices and professional standards. Supports error reporting, error reduction, and patient and staff safety with a focus on fixing error-prone systems. Strives to resolve conflicting expectations to preserve professional integrity. Responds to emergent situations (such as codes, trauma, alarms, patient, visitor, staff safety events) and provides appropriate support to staff, providers, patients, families, and visitors. Coordinates additional assistance as the situation warrants. Responds to and provides assistance with disruptive patients, visitors, or staff. Responds to and provides assistance with patient, visitor, or staff complaints. Effectively communicates complaints and actions taken to respective department manager and Chief Nursing Officer. Responds to and provides support to patients, visitors, or staff in times of crisis. Reviews out of hospital transfers with the patient care team assuring appropriateness of transfer and documentation is complete. Assists staff and departments with trouble shooting and problem-solving issues as they arise. Conducts routine quality record. Assists with Social Services/Case Management/Customer Relations. Provides effective hand off report at the end of each shift. Rounds routinely on hospital departments, staff, and providers throughout shift. Serves as a regulatory resource on off hours for staff to assure compliance with regulatory bodies with decision making. Effectively utilizes the chain of command when escalation of issues is needed. Keeps Chief Nursing Officer and respective department manager informed of patient, visitor, or staff safety events or concerns.
  • Ethics: Decisions and actions are based on ethical principles and Code of Ethics for Nurses with Interpretive Statements (ANA, 2001). Advocates on behalf of recipients of service and personnel.
  • Education and Professional Practice: Supports nursing practice in relation to nursing practice standards and guidelines. Attains knowledge and competency that reflects current practice. Maintains competency with insertion of mid-line IV catheters. Supports and enhances the professional development and skills of staff.
  • Hospital-based Activities: Staff Education. Actively participates in hospital-based projects and or committees as assigned.
  • Cost Awareness: Contributes to the management of departmental budgets. Ensures that budgetary concerns are communicated to the respective department manager and Chief Nursing Officer as needed.
  • Employee Performance: Identifies performance expectations and ensures that employees understand and are held accountable to those expectations. Assesses employee performance in an accurate and timely manner working in collaboration with the department manager to resolve performance issues. Acknowledges employee accomplishments.
  • Staffing: Supports effective staffing patterns to meet departmental needs. Provides temporary help to nursing, clinical and ancillary departments during short, busy periods (multiple admissions, deliveries, surgeries, etc.) or emergencies. Coordinates staff for current and oncoming shifts for all departments (nursing, clinical and ancillary. Assists with flow of patients throughout the entire facility. Coordinate staff during "off hours". Coordinate facility wide events: elevator/pager downtime, emergency responses, resource for other clinical and ancillary departments, coordinating lab courier runs, sleep studies, etc.
