About The Position

The individual in this position collects and analyzes data on patient admissions, transfers, and bed availability in specified clinical areas to improve patient care and maximize bed utilization. This individual is responsible for ensuring the patient is admitted to the most appropriate admission level of care and bed assignment available using criteria for admission and shall function as a liaison for Physicians, Nursing Leadership, Nursing Unit staff, Care Management Staff, and other integral stakeholders ensuring efficient operations. In the absence of the Chief Nursing Officer this individual acts as the Administrator on Duty to make administrative decisions, provide direction and supervision with operational issues for all hospitals departments. This position requires excellent leadership skills with a philosophy of creating a high-trust culture that empowers employees as individual contributors and fosters a strong team environment. This is a Full-Time, 36 hours per week, hourly nights position. EXTRA INCENTIVE: Up to $15,000 sign on bonus, subject to two-year Hospital Sign on Advance Agreement. ( External candidates only. )

Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited school of nursing.
  • Current Washington State RN Licensure.
  • Three (3) to five (5) years acute care clinical nursing experience.
  • Advanced knowledge of Case Management and Utilization Review processes, including but not limited to, InterQual and acute-care patient status regulations and guidelines.
  • Advanced knowledge of electronic medical record systems and Case Management Systems.
  • An understanding of Quality processes and Medicare.
  • Initiative, creativity and outstanding written and verbal communications are required.
  • Demonstrates ability to find creative solutions to complex problems.
  • A strong Bed Management Operations background.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Access and overall computer literacy required.
  • Demonstrate competency on equipment listed on department specific checklist.
  • Critical thinking skills: Seeks resources for direction, when necessary. Performs independent problem solving. Decision-making is logical and deliberate. Perform actions that demonstrate accountability. Exercises safe judgment in decision­ making. Practices within legal and ethical guidelines.
  • Demonstrate competency in ability to care for customers/patients across the age continuum.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor's Degree preferred.
  • Experience in a variety of acute care nursing departments, preferred.
  • Certification in ACLS, BLS, TNCC and PALS preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinates Bed Management Program to accept, coordinate, and assign bed placement requests using the Patient Placement Matrix.
  • Coordinate activities to ensure discharge happens in a timely manner.
  • Maintains real time knowledge of pending discharges/transfers, current admit requests, and bed availability by communicating with the Nursing Leadership and/or Nursing Unit staff.
  • Evaluates all ED and direct admit requests for appropriate admission/level of care using lnterQual criteria, discuss concerns with physicians and suggest alternatives to admission as needed.
  • Collaborates with Nursing Leadership and Nursing Unit staff to resolve delays and facilitate patient flow and bed utilization.
  • Be clinically knowledgeable around disease entities/symptoms and circumstances that may change where a patient can be placed.
  • Be knowledgeable about patient placement, and the type of equipment or medications that can be used or given on each Nursing Unit, using hospital references as a guide.
  • Communicates with admitting physicians regarding bed request and assignment status and keep them apprised of admission progress.
  • Educates physicians regarding appropriate documentation to support patient admission
  • Communicates with the Staffing Coordinator/Nursing Leadership to ensure safe and adequate staffing is in place to admit patients to the Nursing Units.
  • Collaborates with the Care Management Department to identify and recommend appropriate discharges from the Nursing Units.
  • Receives direction from the Director of Care Transitions on all activities relating to Care Management Services.
  • Serves as back-up for the Director of Care For patient placement/bed control, function as the liaison between all stakeholder groups ensuring operational efficiencies.
  • In the absence of the Chief Nursing Officer and/or Nursing Leadership, acts as the administrator on
  • Complete projects as assigned by the Chief of Patient Care Services.
  • Prepare monthly, quarterly, and/or annual reports regarding issues and concerns, trends, and/or other identified meaningful data in the placement of patients and bed control.
  • Participates in hospital-wide quality improvement programs analyzing placement trends, opportunities for improvement, etc., continually improving services.
  • Attends team meetings as assigned to give input and receive feedback regarding pertinent issues and services provided.

  • Coordinates activities with mortuaries and medical examiner.
