About The Position

This is an administrative/supervisory position with a broad nature of responsibilities that includes the Supervision of all nursing staff within the facility along with elements of case management. Performs complex and varied tasks requiring independent knowledge, its application to a variety of situations, as well as the exercise of independent judgment.

Requirements

3-5 years of experience and clinical competency in a variety of patient care areas preferred.
Ability to manage, lead and supervise the work of nursing personnel.
Ability to communicate effectively, orally, and in writing.
A broad knowledge base of the principles, standards, and methods of professional nursing.
A broad knowledge base of the policies and standards of St. James Hospital.
Good knowledge of PC operations and software (Word processing, Meditech, and MIDAS/Interqual) are desirable.
Current license as a Registered Nurse, BSN preferred
Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification
Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) Certification
Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) Certification
Meet the mandatory standard for annual competencies.
Ability to move or transfer patients with an individual effort equal to 35 lbs. Should have a full range of body motion to successfully perform all essential functions of the job, meaning you’ll have to stand, walk, bend, kneel, crouch, and reach frequently during an 8-12-hour shift. Ability to read, write and interpret documents in English such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to read, analyze and interpret common scientific/trade/technical journals. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, or regulatory agencies. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to speak effectively before groups of employees, patients, and vendors.
Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide into all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as proportions, percentages, rates, and ratios.
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. Ability to maintain composure in stressful situations. Nurses are especially vulnerable to post-traumatic stress reactions due to repetitive exposure to work-related traumatic incidents.

Responsibilities

Competent in nursing practice and the nursing process
Practices within defined NYS scope of practice
Serve as a resource to staff for solving clinical issues.
Act as a resource in identifying and/or solving administrative/operational problems and works collaboratively with nursing and ancillary staff to solve problems in a fair, consistent manner.
Provide immediate follow-up, documentation, and communication of incidents to the appropriate manager and Chief Nursing Officer (CNO).
Works in tandem with the unit managers to identify educational needs and ensures completed the required education
Assists unit manager with disciplinary actions of staff on their assigned shift.
Maintains accurate, detailed reports and records
Serves as a role model for nursing employees and promotes excellent clinical care of patients.
Demonstrates leadership ability and management skills, including delegating when necessary, along with promoting intra/interdepartmental communication and collaboration.
Assess patient care requirements on each unit, by making walking rounds during the shift to monitor patient needs, workflow, and assist as needed.
Responds to all emergencies within the facility, (RRT, Codes) and assists as necessary.
Promotes educational opportunities with staff and provides assistance to staff in implementing new procedures/protocols.
Coordinates transfer of patients within the facility or to another facility as required.
Promotes customer/patient satisfaction, sometimes dealing with difficult or emotional situations.
Is knowledgeable regarding specific departmental and critical care (emergency) area policies and procedures and their proper implementation
Obtain supplies from the supply and purchasing department (SPD) as needed
Call appropriate employees for OR cases as directed
Demonstrates ability to carry out SJH mission, i.e. to provide quality, patient-centered care with an emphasis on physical, psychological, emotional, and spiritual needs
Responsible for understanding and adherence to Standards of Behavior policy
Identify and communicate staff needs for continuing education to the appropriate manager
Assist staff to provide a safe work environment for patient care.
Assist staff to interpret change in a positive manner.
Consistently and independently follows established safety and infection control procedures. Intervenes in unsafe situations.
Assist physicians and staff in admission criteria for assigning admission status to patients (observation/admission)
Receives admission (inpatient/observation) information, assigns bed, and lets appropriate staff know.
Assists ED and Med/Surg manager with staff scheduling
Assists case management with completion of UR reviews
Monitor documentation for adherence to Utilization rules and regulations
Report to the administrator-on-call significant incidents and problems such as: Patient/family problems or concerns Physician concerns Major damage or utility outages Security/safety concerns Union activities Fire/Disaster/bomb threats Matters of legal importance Calls received from the Office of Healthcare Quality, Department of Health department, or any other regulatory body
Adhere to the dress code. Appearance is neat and clean.
Complete annual education requirements.
Maintain patient confidentiality at all times.
Report to work on time and as scheduled.
Wear identification while on duty.
Maintain regulatory requirements, including all state, federal and local regulations.
