About The Position

The Hourly - Library Assistant for Engineering and Honors provides projects and services to support research and instructional needs to the College of Engineering and the Honors College. In collaboration with the Engineering and Honors College Librarian, this position will engage in research, reference, library instruction, peer-to-peer consultations, collection development, and other special projects. This position works with the Engineering and Honors College Librarian and additional library colleagues to learn more about information and digital literacies, educational technologies, library resources, and services for students at a professional level. The person in this position will contribute to highly collaborative projects such as collection development, working with department assistants and graduate assistants on shared projects, collaborating with other departments like experiential learning, and supporting outreach activities and events. This position will also work closely and collaboratively with a dedicated team of colleagues in the library to provide excellent service to our patrons, including answering research questions, serving on chat shifts, and participating in other opportunities that allow them to explore areas of personal interest that contribute to professional development. Regular, reliable, and non-disruptive attendance is an essential job duty, as is the ability to create and maintain collegial, harmonious working relationships with others. This is an in-person position.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or four years of related experience
  • Education or experience in a science, technology, engineering, or math field
  • At least one year of experience in a library setting, research support, or student services
  • Basic knowledge of or a willingness to learn academic research methods
  • Customer service experience
  • Effective interpersonal and organizational skills
  • Effective oral and written communication skills
  • The ability to adapt to a flexible working schedule
  • The ability to work independently and with team members
  • The ability to work effectively with individuals with varying backgrounds

Nice To Haves

  • Currently enrolled in graduate school
  • Education or experience in an engineering field
  • Experience with or interest in teaching, research, and writing
  • Experience with or interest in using common office tools (e.g. Microsoft Office) and willingness to learn new software such as chat software and libguides
  • Experience with or willingness to learn makerspaces and the maker movement, prototyping, extended reality (XR) technology, and/or other engineering projects for student and faculty research support
  • Customer service experience
