About The Position

The Hotel at the University of Maryland is a AAA 4-Diamond independent property located directly across from the University of Maryland’s main campus. With 297 guest rooms, including 24 suites, and over 40,000 sq. ft. of flexible event space, we host events ranging from intimate gatherings to large-scale conferences of up to 1,500 attendees. We’re seeking a driven, charismatic, and experienced Sports Market Sales Manager with a strong focus on professional and collegiate sports to join our high-performing team. This role is ideal for a proactive sales professional who thrives in a fast-paced, competitive environment, brings an established network of sports contacts, and knows how to close complex group business tied to schedules, seasons, and major events. Requirements

  • 3+ years of continuous hotel group sales experience, with a strong emphasis on sports, SMERF, or large-scale group travel
  • Demonstrated success selling to professional teams, collegiate programs, athletic departments, or sports organizations
  • Proven B2B sales experience with transactions of $50K+
  • Strong prospecting skills and ability to build relationships with coaches, athletic administrators, operations managers, and event planners
  • High school diploma required; associate or bachelor’s degree preferred
  • Polished, professional appearance and confident presence
  • Exceptional communication, negotiation, organization, and time-management skills
  • Ability to work independently, manage shifting priorities, and perform under pressure
  • Proficiency in Outlook, Word, Excel, and Delphi/Amadeus
  • Flexibility to work nontraditional hours, including evenings, weekends, holidays, and event-driven peak periods

Responsibilities

  • Own the full sales cycle with a primary focus on professional, collegiate, and amateur sports groups, from prospecting through closing
  • Proactively source and develop relationships with athletic departments, sports organizations, leagues, tournaments, and event operators
  • Travel as needed for sporting events, trade shows, client meetings, and industry conferences
  • Negotiate group room rates, concessions, and hotel services within established guidelines
  • Draft, review, and manage contracts and rate agreements with accuracy and urgency
  • Partner with hotel operations, catering, and revenue management teams to ensure seamless execution for sports teams and event stakeholders
  • Conduct site inspections, presentations, and host events for sports decision-makers and planners
  • Represent the hotel at sports-focused networking events, showcases, and industry functions
  • Maintain accurate and timely records in Delphi/Amadeus
  • Prepare and deliver monthly sales activity reports, forecasts, and pipeline updates
  • Respond promptly to client inquiries, understanding the time-sensitive nature of sports travel
  • Consistently meet or exceed monthly and annual sales goals
  • Contribute to team initiatives and foster a collaborative, high-performance culture
