About The Position

The staff hospitalist must be able to competently care for the hospitalized patient throughout the hospital stay. This includes emergency evaluation and triage in addition to admission to the hospital and formation of a differential diagnosis. It is essential to formulate a comprehensive care plan in accordance with the most up to date, evidence based protocols. The staff hospitalist must possess excellent communication skills and exhibit these through communication with primary medical doctors as well as in house consultant physicians and colleagues. The hospitalist must interact in a professional manner with all members of the patient care team. The hospitalist physician should participate in education of the housestaff physicians, students, nurses and all members of the patient care team. The hospitalist should keep high quality care and patient safety in mind while transitioning the patient back to the outpatient setting upon discharge. The hospitalist shall deliver the above with service excellence and patient satisfaction in mind.

Requirements

  • Medical Degree (MD, DO) and Internal Medicine Residency completion
  • Inpatient Care of the Medical Patient
  • Board Certification in Internal Medicine within one year of hire

Responsibilities

  • Provides direct patient care
  • Admits adult patients to the hospital for private primary care physicians
  • Conducts comprehensive examinations and evaluations and makes treatment decisions
  • Communicates regularly and effectively with primary care physicians
  • Provides general internal medicine consultation to non-internal medicine physicians
  • Provides primary and consultative in-patient medical care
  • Takes call as necessary to provide 24/7 coverage
  • Coordinates care of patients through collaboration with other physicians and staff
  • Enrolls in all Managed Care plans with which the Hospital participates
  • Provides leadership in the Department of Medicine and the Internal Medicine Residency Program
  • Directly supervises and teaches medical residents and students
  • Role models excellence in service to patients and primary care physicians
  • Provides leadership in the use of Physician Computerized Order Entry and Health Information System
  • Participates in formal medical education and transitional care rounds
  • Provides in-service education on hospital based best practice to nursing staff
  • Assists the Residency Program Director in revising the curriculum
  • Completes mandatory hospital/unit based in-services
  • Helps identify goals for achievement consistent with the Department and Hospitals goals
  • Actively participates in own performance appraisal
  • Demonstrates the ability to accept constructive criticism
  • Identifies problem prone clinical practices and initiates solutions
  • Works collaboratively with Hospitalist Director and Quality Management staff
  • Evaluates outcomes and identifies improvements in care
  • Performs and coordinates clinical documentation audits
  • Enhances academic and clinical productivity through publication and presentation
  • Coordinates studies with the Internal Medicine Residency and other providers
  • Works collaboratively with Hospitalist Director to foster collegial relationships
  • Works collaboratively on new in-patient programs and services
  • Works collaboratively with Nursing staff to maintain a safe environment
  • Utilizes effective time management skills
  • Participates on Hospital committees and CQI teams
  • Meets volume goals set by the Hospital
  • Maintains up to date knowledge and skills in hospital based medical practice
  • Assures that all patients are treated with respect and needs are met promptly
  • Shows consideration for patient's family and visitors
  • Remains calm in stressful situations
  • Participates in interdisciplinary rounds to impact patient safety and length of stay
  • Improves communication with nursing, ancillary staff, consultants, family, and patients
  • Increases service to patients, families, consultants, and nursing staff
  • Increases efficiency and decreases waste
  • Increases production through utilization management
  • Participates in different committees related to patient care
  • Undertakes quality assurance projects
