About The Position

The staff hospitalist must be able to competently care for the hospitalized patient throughout the hospital stay. This includes emergency evaluation and triage in addition to admission to the hospital and formation of a differential diagnosis. It is essential to formulate a comprehensive care plan in accordance with the most up to date, evidence based protocols. The staff hospitalist must possess excellent communication skills and exhibit these through communication with primary medical doctors as well as in house consultant physicians and colleagues. The hospitalist must interact in a professional manner with all members of the patient care team. The hospitalist physician should participate in education of the housestaff physicians, students, nurses and all members of the patient care team. The hospitalist should keep high quality care and patient safety in mind while transitioning the patient back to the outpatient setting upon discharge. The hospitalist shall deliver the above with service excellence and patient satisfaction in mind.

Requirements

  • Medical Degree (MD, DO) and completion of Internal Medicine Residency.
  • Experience in inpatient care of the medical patient.
  • Board Certification in Internal Medicine within one year of hire.

Responsibilities

  • Provides direct patient care including admitting adult patients to the hospital, conducting comprehensive examinations, and making treatment decisions.
  • Communicates regularly and effectively with primary care physicians regarding patient care.
  • Provides general internal medicine consultation to non-internal medicine physicians.
  • Coordinates care of patients through collaboration with other physicians and nursing staff.
  • Teaches and role models excellence in service to patients and primary care physicians.
  • Evaluates outcomes of in-patient medical care and identifies improvements.
  • Demonstrates leadership skills by fostering collegial relationships with primary care providers.
  • Assures that all patients are treated with respect and that needs are met promptly.
  • Participates in interdisciplinary rounds to impact patient safety and length of stay.
  • Improves communication with nursing, ancillary staff, and families.
  • Increases service to patients, families, and staff.
  • Increases efficiency and decreases waste in patient care.
  • Increases production through utilization management.
  • Participates in quality assurance projects.
