About The Position

LifeShare is seeking a dependable Blood Products Distribution Technician to join our hospital services team at our Monroe donor center. The Technician will monitor blood product inventory levels, retrieve blood products from collections sites, receive and fulfill customer orders, and package and deliver blood and blood components to healthcare facilities and to other centers as needed. Providing excellent customer service and adhering to established quality practices, the Technician will help to ensure a safe blood supply is available at healthcare centers in our community when needed for traumas, therapies and treatments. Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Requires handling of blood and blood products
  • Ability to lift equipment, such as coolers, boxes and supplies up to 40 lbs
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including on-call rotation
  • Requires operation of a Company vehicle; must possess a valid driver's license and satisfactory motor vehicle record (3 years of licensed driving history and no DUI convictions and no more than 2 moving violations in past 5 years)
  • Must be able to read and discern packaging labels and document orders
  • Must be dependable, punctual and have effective communication skills
  • Must demonstrate a positive approach toward customers and other staff members, acting in a highly professional manner at all times
  • Must be able to maintain confidentiality of donor or patient information at all times
  • Consistent with training, performs intermediate product management duties, including:
  • Irradiates product as necessary
  • Monitors equipment and responds to alarms and alerts; performs preventative maintenance of equipment
  • Makes decisions relative to quality control (including shipment temperature checks, discarding/destroying of unsuitable units, shipping of expired units for further manufacturing), safety issues, company policies and public relations
  • May provide immediate guidance and direction to junior technicians
  • Performs departmental record control responsibilities to include review, corrective action and organization
  • Requires 6 months of on-the-job experience and meets or exceeds all position competencies and departmental quality standards.
  • Must have successfully completed training on use of irradiator (where applicable)
  • Consistent with training, performs advanced product management duties, including:
  • Release of directed units, shipping of dangerous goods, manual labeling, processing test-positive Autologous units, and receiving blood derivatives
  • Monitors product storage equipment, audit reports, alarm activation for Datatron and other system function checks, sets up RTD calibrator
  • Requires 12 months of on-the-job experience and meets or exceeds all position competencies and departmental quality standards.
  • Work requires frequent operation of a vehicle, sometimes for long periods of time.
  • Must be able to lift equipment, such as coolers and shipping packages, up to 40 lbs., unassisted.
  • Must be able to work irregular hours, often in excess of 8 hours per day, and weekends and holidays.
  • Must be able to work with needles, scissors, blood bags, human blood and blood processing equipment and work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Work involves potential exposure to infectious diseases from blood and blood products.
  • Requires operation of a Company vehicle for blood transport; must possess a valid driver’s license and be insurable by our commercial auto insurance carrier.

Responsibilities

  • Drives Company vehicle to pick up donor blood from blood collection sites and transport blood to the appropriate locations.
  • Prepares all necessary paperwork; separates unsuitable units; packages blood products collected and blood samples tubes and transports to processing facility.
  • Prepares apheresis product in computer.
  • Monitors product inventory levels at all times and notifies supervisor when levels fall below-established minimum levels. Identifies and removes outdated products.
  • Answers telephone to receive product orders from hospital customers or other centers; documents orders, selects units, charges out and fills orders.
  • Packages for transport and/or shipment of blood, blood components and/or derivatives to/from the hospital; converts and relabels product.
  • Receives returns of products, documenting appropriately in the computer system.
  • Follows all Company policies and procedures, regulatory requirements (e.g., FDA, OSHA, AABB) and complies with good manufacturing practices (cGMP).
  • Participates in various meetings, such as in-service training, continuing education programs, staff meetings, and safety meetings.
  • Maintains, organizes, and cleans and decontaminates functional work area, equipment, and vehicles; reporting malfunctioning equipment or vehicles as soon as detected.
  • Makes routine decisions pertaining to work duties as permitted under policies and procedures, referring to the supervisor any issues which could possibly harm a donor or employee, cause adverse opinions of the Center or the Company, or interfere with the operations of the department or Center.
  • Meets and exceeds customer expectations and adheres to established quality practices while seeking to continually improve work performance.
