About The Position

The University of Illinois Chicago (UIC) is seeking experienced Hospital Security Officers to support the UI Health Hospital. The Security Officer will perform or supervise protective service work, guarding the UIC campus, which includes the hospital, medical centers, student housing, and campus buildings. Responsibilities include asset protection and public safety duties in various fixed post and patrol assignments, as well as controlling access to facilities by employees, visitors, and students. The work schedule includes 3 shifts, assigned at the time of hire based on departmental operational needs.

Requirements

  • High school graduation or equivalent.
  • Valid Illinois driver's license.
  • No record of conviction of a felony, or of a crime involving moral turpitude.
  • Current State of Illinois Permanent Employee Registration Card (PERC).
  • One year (12 months) of security experience in an institutional or medical setting.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of facility security requirements and regulations.
  • Knowledge of physical restraint techniques to control combative individuals, use of handcuffs, baton.
  • Knowledge of emergency response procedures and techniques, including first aid, CPR, fire safety and control.
  • Knowledge of defensive training and response protocols for security breaches including physical restraints.
  • Knowledge of negotiation and persuasion dialogue managing initial communication in crisis situations.
  • Crisis Prevention Institute's Nonviolent Crisis Intervention Training.
  • Possession of the International Association for Healthcare Security and Safety (IAHSS) Certification as a Certified Healthcare Protection Administrator (CHPA).
  • Ability to complete a Physical Agility Examination.

Responsibilities

  • Transport high-risk patients to other clinics and healthcare areas, perform patient escorts in ambulance and/or medical transport vehicles, and secure patient valuables.
  • Subdue patients to allow for the application of medication or physical restraints and assist in the application of four-point restraints to high-risk patients.
  • Provide 'stand-by' services for active suicidal or homicidal clients on a clinical unit and aid in the search for and return of escaped or absconded patients.
  • Patrol campus buildings and grounds, including medical facilities, to observe security breaches or unsafe conditions.
  • Answer disturbance calls, alarms, and initiate response actions necessary to protect lives and property.
  • Direct individuals away from unauthorized areas of unsafe conditions and respond quickly to emergencies.
  • Summon law enforcement authorities to make arrests and restore peace and order when unlawful or hazardous conditions require control.
  • Respond to emergency situations and drills, administer emergency first aid or CPR, and perform fire control duties at small fires.
  • Manage conflict through negotiation.
  • Dispatch calls using radio, page staff, prepare visitor and/or parking passes, and control personnel access by monitoring identification.
  • Interview witnesses, write detailed narrative reports, maintain daily activity reports, and record visitor names.
  • Unlock gates and doors, and may drive patrol car while making rounds.
  • Search for and attempt to locate missing individuals, notifying law enforcement authorities as required.
  • Control and direct traffic, enforce parking regulations, and issue warnings.
  • Enforce non-smoking policy on grounds, issuing warnings and citations when applicable.
  • Subdue individuals who exhibit aggressive behavior to restore peace and order.
