This position works mostly 1:1 with student-patients who have mild to severe intellectual disabilities. This role regularly collaborates with other hospital schoolteachers on staff, parents/guardians, students’ regular teachers and school personnel, as well as the medical team to meet patients’ educational needs. This position assesses the needs of students and provides appropriate support and interventions (such as implementing existing IEPs or creating individualized curriculum for patients based on assessment). This role also assists regular school and family with the development of IEPs, 504 plans, and homebound education as needed. Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in education
  • Three years' experience in Teaching
  • Resuscitation Certification Requirement: Basic Life Support Healthcare Provider (BLS HCP) required within 90 day of employment.

Responsibilities

  • Identifies and coordinates the educational needs of children referred within the hospital including developing and facilitating educational programming and transition planning, participating in multidisciplinary treatment team programming, providing patient academic education and tutoring, providing support and guidance for parents, and consulting with schools.
  • Assesses educational needs of patients and families based on patient/family requests, staff and physician referrals, and students’ school functioning. This position provides consultation and expertise for inpatient and family consults, MDs, therapists, RNs, schoolteachers and administrators. It serves as a resource for patients, families, and school personnel in developing Individual Education Plans IEPs and 504 Plans.
  • Collaborates with public and private educational systems to obtain and communicate educational information and to arrange appropriate educational service and transition plans.
  • Completes timely and accurate patient care documentation within compliance standards.
  • Works effectively to recruit train and supervise volunteers.
  • Authors materials, such as presentations, documents, and handouts for patients, parents, family members, and other hospital staff.
  • Collaborates with other schoolteachers on staff.
  • Works in a constant state of alertness and safe manner.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
