The Department of State Hospitals - Metropolitan State Hospital is accepting applications for Hospital Police Sergeant, Permanent/Fulltime. Under the general supervision of the Hospital Police Lieutenant, the Hospital Police Sergeant performs duties in the prevention of crime and the enforcement of law and order. The Hospital Police Sergeant plans, organizes, and directs the work and training of subordinate Hospital Police Officers assigned to a shift or unit and may perform administrative duties as directed. Participates in, supervises and coordinates police operations relating to patrol, traffic, investigation, special assignment and other law enforcement activities; participates in procedural development, interpretation of policies and procedures and analysis of crime and service problems. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION/REQUIREMENTS: Applicants are required to successfully complete the Department of State Hospital's Orientation training during their probationary period. Applicants are required to successfully complete the POST Supervisory Course during their probationary period. Penal Code Section 832 Satisfactory completion of the training requirement of Penal Code Section 832 may be demonstrated with possession of a P.C. 832 Arrest Certificate. Requirements

  • Applicants are required to successfully complete the Department of State Hospital's Orientation training during their probationary period.
  • Applicants are required to successfully complete the POST Supervisory Course during their probationary period.
  • Satisfactory completion of the training requirement of Penal Code Section 832 may be demonstrated with possession of a P.C. 832 Arrest Certificate.
  • Applicants are required to successfully complete the Department of State Hospital's Orientation training during their probationary period.
  • Applicants are required to successfully complete the POST Supervisory Course during their probationary period.
  • The position(s) require(s) a valid California Drivers License (CDL).
  • The position(s) require(s) a Drug Screening be passed prior to being hired.
  • The position(s) require(s) a Background Investigation be cleared prior to being hired.
  • The position(s) require(s) Medical Clearance prior to being hired.
  • The position(s) require(s) Psychological Evaluation clearance prior to being hired.
  • The position(s) require(s) a(n) PC-832 Arrest and Firearms Certificate.

  • Must have knowledge of basic principles and practices of law enforcement; procedures and laws on patrol operations, investigations, vehicle code enforcement, laws of arrest, search and seizure, and court operations; hospital and departmental rules, policies, and procedures regarding conduct and control of patients, staff, and visitors.
  • Have a sympathetic understanding of the problems of the mentally ill; tolerance, tact, and emotional stability; ability to remain calm in emergency situations; and willingness to work at night and to report for duty at any time when emergencies arise.
