The Hospice Chaplain at Mayo Clinic provides essential emotional support, spiritual counsel, and comfort to patients and their families, addressing their spiritual needs as assigned. This role involves consulting with Mayo Clinic staff, patients, and families on ethical, moral, or personal issues, ensuring a spiritual perspective is integrated into patient care. The chaplain is skilled in crisis management and actively participates in the interdisciplinary patient care team, promoting a healing environment that enhances both spiritual and emotional health for patients and staff alike. In addition to direct patient care, the chaplain collaborates with other members of the Spiritual Care Department to plan and deliver a comprehensive program of spiritual care. This includes serving on various committees and task forces within the department and the broader hospital enterprise. The chaplain also supports educational initiatives within the department and engages in leadership activities, which encompass staff development, teaching, critical incident stress management, community involvement, and participation in research as appropriate. Flexibility in working hours is essential, as the chaplain may be required to work days, evenings, nights, holidays, and weekends, with on-call duties as needed. The chaplain is responsible for preparing and maintaining records for assigned areas, documenting patient care encounters in the medical record, and recording work tasks in direct patient care within the EPIC system to ensure productivity is accurately tracked. A deep understanding of cultural humility and the ability to assess and interpret data reflective of the patient's status, particularly in relation to age-specific needs, is crucial. Additionally, hospice chaplains may need to travel to provide spiritual support in various facilities or patients' residences, and they may be required to become an Independent Living Donor Advocate (ILDA) upon completion of training. Other chaplain roles within the enterprise may also include advance care planning responsibilities.
