About The Position

In collaboration with the Horticulture team and departmental goals, the PT Horticulture Technician team member cares for nursery and greenhouse plant propagation work and care, and planting for exhibited garden spaces including the Cole Family Monarch Conservation Center & Butterfly House exhibited plant care through its open months May - September and pre- and post- season preparations. Winter season includes team assistance with grounds for snow/ice management as needed. Must be available to work mornings 8 am – noon Monday - Friday. Morning seasonal timeframes may shift with daylight hours and may be subject to alterations due to inclement weather conditions. Knowledge of: Prior experience with horticulture, greenhouse propagation and plant care Skilled in the safe use of the general array of garden hand tools, power equipment, and utility vehicles Campus and safety protocols Minimum qualifications include a high school degree or equivalent G.E.D., related work experience in landscaping or other grounds care work is desired Demonstrated Skill in: Work well independently and as a team Be reliable, dependable, a multitasker, proactive and flexible

Requirements

  • Must have a high school degree or equivalent G.E.D.
  • Related work experience in landscaping or other grounds care work is desired.
  • Applicants must have a valid North Carolina driver’s license.
  • Prior experience with horticulture, greenhouse propagation and plant care
  • Skilled in the safe use of the general array of garden hand tools, power equipment, and utility vehicles
  • Campus and safety protocols
  • Work well independently and as a team
  • Be reliable, dependable, a multitasker, proactive and flexible
  • Must be able to lift 50 lb bags
  • Required to walk, sit and stand for extended periods of time
  • Ability to work in all weather conditions for various lengths of time under a variety of conditions including both hot and cold temperatures, high humidity, and exposure to various plants and animals
  • Safely and comfortably navigate uneven surfaces including gravel, grass, hills, and stairs

Responsibilities

  • Nursery and greenhouse plant propagation work and care
  • Select indoor/outdoor plant care
  • Mulching, selective weeding, IPM pest and disease identification and management
  • Planting for exhibited garden spaces
  • Working independently or with other horticulture staff and volunteers as needed to maintain exhibited and landscaped regions
