About The Position

Plans, organizes, and coordinates garden and greenhouse activities. Supervises and instructs prisoner workers in horticultural practices, chemical use, and other propagation techniques.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Horticulture or other closely related field; OR an equivalent combination of related education and experience in horticulture, agriculture, and/or landscape design.
  • A pesticide applicator license and ServSafe certification must be obtained within three (3) months of the hire date.
  • Due to the nature of this position, the successful applicant must pass a required background check through fingerprinting and enrollment in the continuous RAP Back (Record of Arrest and Prosecution Back) program in accordance with current County Human Resources policy requirements.

  • Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing
  • Manage the operation of two heated greenhouses and produce gardens
  • Serve as a resource for landscape horticulture and pond projects
  • Work with a variety of stakeholders in various settings
  • Must be able to lift 50 pounds.
  • This position is required to work with prisoners at both the Salt Lake County Metro and Oxbow Jails, as well as frequently attend the Downtown Farmer’s Market.
  • May be required to work nights and weekends as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Supervises and instructs prisoner workers participating in the Horticulture Program.
  • Designs, develops, and administers the agriculture plans for the Jail Gardens.
  • Manages day-to-day operational activities in the Jail Gardens.
  • Manages the public produce sales and other related events
  • Tracks resource use and garden production information.
  • Generates statistical data and progress reports.
  • Works cooperatively with program stakeholders and participants.
  • Researches and develops educational opportunities for prisoner workers and the public.
  • Facilitates Jail Garden tours for stakeholders and the public.
  • Instructs Food Handlers Permit classes to prisoner workers.
