About The Position

The City of Birmingham is seeking to hire a Horticulture Maintenance Supervisor to schedule and review work of employees who plan and prepare the type, quantity, and growing schedule of plants, flowers, shrubs, and trees. Work involves propagating and caring for plants and other landscaping materials including diagnosing and treating plants. Horticulture Maintenance Supervisors develop deadlines, projects, and work to be done. Employees in this job class plan and carry out assignments, resolve conflicts, coordinate the work with others, and interpret policies in terms of established objectives. Work may involve applying or assisting with applying pesticide applicators and other horticulture type work (e.g., cutting grass, weeding, mixing soil, and watering, pruning, and propagating plants).

Requirements

  • Birmingham Driver's license.
  • Ornamental & Turf Pest Control Commercial Applicator Permit (OTPC) or Ornamental & Turf Pest Control Supervisor License (OTPS).
  • Experience in leading employee groups (i.e., giving direction, providing guidance).
  • Experience in horticulture maintenance practices (i.e., pruning, weeding, fertilizing, identifying plants, identifying horticulture diseases, use of small landscaping equipment).
  • Ability to obtain a Class B CDL within 90 days of employment.

Responsibilities

  • Manages team productivity by identifying and assigning jobs, observing crews, assisting in horticultural tasks, and inspecting work areas to ensure that jobs are completed correctly and in a timely manner.
  • Procures and/or manages inventory (i.e., supplies and equipment) to ensure the products and services are available to meet the operational needs of each department.
  • Provides service to internal and/or external customers.
  • Responds to workplace accidents and incidents by communicating with emergency services, completing accident/incident reports, filing copies of reports, ensuring involved employees are drug tested, and notifying the Horticulture Operations Manager in order to follow departmental protocols regarding workplace accidents and incidents.
  • Supervises staff by assigning and distributing work, directing staff in their job duties, monitoring progress of work, providing feedback and/or training.
  • Utilizes databases to assist with data storage, organization, analysis and reporting.
  • Engages in activities designed to ensure professional development, awareness of developments in the field, and knowledge of relevant practices, rules, laws, policies, and/or guidelines.
  • Assigns and distributes work to staff based upon departmental/division needs, deadlines and qualifications of personnel.
  • Assists crews in horticultural tasks (e.g., mix soil, water plants, prune plants, propagate plants) to increase efficiency of daily operations.
  • Identifies potential jobs by checking event calendars and assessing the state of frequently serviced areas to stay ahead of service requests.
  • Inspects work areas by visiting job sites to ensure crews have all needed materials (e.g., oil, bags, soil, seeds, plants, equipment) and that the specifications of the service request are being fulfilled.
